The iPhone OS can and does multitask.

You can see the iPhone performing multiple tasks at once, and running multiple Apple services at the same time. What it doesn’t do is allow 3rd party apps to do it. Apple could change this with the flick of the switch, if it wanted to.

As for Microsoft’s coming mobile platform, I feel certain it will fail in the market. Microsoft has copied Apple on the no-multitasking issue, and also on the closed platform issue. Windows Phone 7 will only allow apps that have been approved by Microsoft, and only allows downloads from Microsoft’s app store.

Windows Mobile 7 will alienate business users, as apps have to be rewritten for Silverlight. There’s nothing that’s going to attract developers away from Android or iPhone. Windows Phone 7 won’t be able to dislodge the entrenched competition, and will fail in the market.

Ok, so what’s up with Steve Jobs? Was it a marketing strategy to lean more people into purchasing the iSlate so that people wouldn’t be majestically overtaken by the announcement of the iPhone 4G? I know that Apple IS indeed going to keep up with the development of smartphones and I know that they will come out with a new iPhone 4G, but the question is when? Perhaps July I assume, but I hate all of these websites having these prototype phones if you will, being displayed. It gets kind of annoying. Please just announce it yes or no..or maybe this could be another market strategy to have people such as I to get onto the internet and post such things as this to get me (and you all) hyped up on purchasing this “to be” device. Come on Apple, give your “customers” a break. Lol I’m going to regret getting this Nexus One (although it too is amazing looking) and be wanting the 4G also.

Yes that is true Windows 7 is way better than Vista.
But it doesn’t mean it’s better than Ubuntu, which in some scenarios it actually is. Like if you really need to use some Microsoft software which will not run under Ubuntu. Only if you are going to use wine which I think will have performance problems (never tried it).
And for the fact that environment is dominated by Microsoft’s OS: If we all think like you than it will always be dominated by MS, which will be good only for Microsoft and bad for all of us. Just have a look at internet browsers, now that there is some competition from mozilla and lately from google the browsers are just getting faster and more compatible with web standards. why shouldn’t it be like that for OS as well? I think some competition is always good.

any way I understand, your article is not about it but please be more careful even for “little” things which are not in the main focus.

Actually, Amazon is misreporting the offer that MacMillan made. The actual price range that MacMillan suggested to Amazon was a sliding scale of $5.99-$14.99.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if Amazon consumes the bulk of the profit for a title (generally 70% or more), it’s likely that the author will not sell generate the income needed to make printing the book economically viable for the publisher. Therefore, that author probably won’t get a new book contract in the future and fans won’t get new fiction.

Additionally, if Amazon succeeds in setting both the buy and sell prices for an eBook, they will attempt the same thing for other products. If they are successful at this with MacMillan, they will move on to the other big publishers before hitting the small presses. You’ll see a drastic decline in the number of new novels published by new and midlist writers.

The publishers aren’t just trying to make money, they’re trying to give the reading work creative, innovative, interesting fiction – and in doing so they need to take chances on a wide range of authors, not just King, Rowling, Meyers, etc.

I was merely suggesting that Windows 7 is far superior than Vista. That’s a fact proven by the impressive Windows 7 sales compared to Vista’s numbers. It’s pretty real and that’s why Windows 7 can be a better choice than Ubuntu. So many people wouldn’t have upgraded in case Windows 7 was a total flop like Vista, would they?. I wasn’t going to go about the advantages Windows 7 has over Vista or Ubuntu, since that wasn’t the point of the article.

Furthermore, considering that the Latitude 13 is rather a business laptop it’s only logical to want an OS capable to handle well that business environment and, for now at least, we know that environment is dominated by Microsoft’s OS. Not that Ubuntu is not something worth considering or anything like that…

So, compared to a laptop you probably now carry, along with its brick of a power adaptor and a dslr, a few lenses, spare batteries, battery charger, perhaps tripod, not to mention filters, a dongle a fraction of the size of a British electric plug is unreasonable? Please.

The reason Apple did not include an SD slot is to sell additional memory at their outrageous mark-ups.

By the way, Apple has an excellent and active relationship with EyeFi. Probably solves your problem, spend a fortune to save the space of carrying a small dongle. And, as a photographer, you’ll need a good supply of EyeFi’s as you won’t want to have the iPad serve as your only backup (iPad syncs limited to its “home” computer) and one seldom has the time to upload and erase when they need free memory.

Not. It’s an iPhone in a case with a spec next to the speaker. Not a light or a camera. The spec is not level with the speaker, apple wouldn’t make something that asymmetrical. The black is just a case. It kooks like it isn’t even with the phone, a case. Look I’m just as excited as the next person but I highly doubt it. Now what we can do is measure the screen size of the two devices and compare them. Of the iPhone ratio comes out bigger than 3.5 and more around 4, then I’ll get excited.

This dispute will be resolved by us, the consumer, who should reject the higher cost by simply not buying the books and thereby sending a message to those other publishers waiting in the wings to raise their prices as well. When they see MacMillans sales tank they will think long and hard before following suit by raising their prices. Lets face it anything more than $10 and it’s worth waiting a few months and buying the book on the bargain racks at Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc. The big benefit of the Kindle is both the convenience and the COST. Take away one and half of Kindles value is gone.

As I type this post from my Google phone, i can really see the desire for the ipad. Typing will be far easier. Sure I have a macbook in the car right now but being at this coffee shop makes me not want to lug it out. I like this cushy chair and don’t want to move to a table. That, and I love ebooks. Ipad is better looking than kindle. Lastly, no more man-handling a full laptop to show others pix and videos.

Interesting article. FYI, the newly released iPad does not use OLED display technology, rather LCD. They are equipped with LED-backlit LCD displays with IPS for widened viewing angle.

I have NEVER coveted anything that says apple on it. Until today. This is a device that can easily be a household appliance rather than a computer.

Stick it in the kitchen for recipes.
Use for ebooks.
watch a movie in bed and fall asleep. u
se it for sales presentations (yes even in business)

My grandma could use it. (she can’t see an iphone too well).

I just hope it is very convenient to charge. Maybe a powermat will come up with something

Sony currently has three eReaders for sale (the PRS-300, PRS-600 and the PRS-900) with the cheapest of the three on sale for $199 ($159 refurbished at the Sony store).

Hi Mike – thanks for your comment, you make some alarmingly good points. RAW support would be magnificent, of course – that didn’t occur to me and it really should have as I only use RAW unless images I’m taking are just ’snaps’. Thanks for bringing up these points.
