I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of all those watches out there with their hands and easy-to-read numbers. I am so over being able to find out what time it is with just a simple glance. I want to be challenged. I want to be able to feel like I accomplished something when someone asks me for the time. Whilst Bluetooth headsets have come a long way in terms of design and aesthetics they manage, still, in the main, to reside just out of the cool envelope so this designer concept Bluetooth headset, known as the Volution, conceived of by Chinese designer Fandi Meng certainly caught our eye in seemingly fusing the functionality of wireless connectivity with designer jewellery.

Watches are definitely a fashion statement. Just like you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear, a watch can certainly be an indicator of cool as well. If you’re looking to make an impression then next time you someone asks you for a light image their face as you whip out a mini gold bar from your pocket whilst pulling your most convincing Roger Moore inspired facial expression before asking ‘Would you….(insert pause here – look meaningful)….like a drink to go with that?’

Unfortunately, this Gold Bar Gas Lighter is not actually made from real gold, but from aluminum with a gold painted coating which will no doubt chip away within the first week, but you can’t have everything in life can you?

Breath Capture Jewellery

All of us, at some time or other, have found ourselves tucking something away that will serve to trigger memories of someone who, for whatever reason, we would like to remember – be it a lock of hair, a concert ticket or even a well thumbed Decree Nici.

And now, thanks to a company by the name of BreathCapture you can even seal away some of their breath – though quite how something wholly invisible contained in a transparent tube is going to serve as a reminder of them – unless, of course, they were suffering from a particularly heavy cold at the time (in which case you could find yourself with something resembling a mini lava lamp – there’s an image for you) frankly eludes me.

The items in question come in a range of styles and in a variety of forms – from pendants to bracelets and even earrings – thus allowing you to keep a small part of their breath and wear it about your person, which is handy; as if the world’s air supply suddenly pops off into space the air contained with these charms could be used to stay alive just a millisecond longer than anyone else – including the person you took the breath from. A comforting thought.

The pendant in the image shown above, known as the Straight Shooter, quite apart from sounding like a curious weapon from yesteryear, retails at $13.50 but prices vary across the range – all of which can be viewed, in full, via the product’s official site linked here.

Bizarre Silver Earthworm Bracelet

We’ve featured our fair share of curious jewellery on Thoughts from the Sidelines, such as the ring with memory and the multi-piece BLT ring (to name two of many), but it’s been a while since we’ve posted concerning any wacky jewellery items, so let’s rectify that straight away with this rather curious Earthworm Bracelet.

Whilst you could make your own, natural alternative to this earthworm bracelet by locating a dead worm and gluing the length of its body to a suitably sized elastic band (hey presto), I’ll warrant that it won’t look quite as fetching as this solid silver Earthworm Bracelet from the Bittersweet New York Store website.

That said, my proposed, admittedly pale imitation won’t cost you $220 either.

Politically Inspired Barbed Wire Jewellery

We’re no strangers to unusual jewellery here at TFTS Towers having already previously featured rings that transmit your personal, electronic business card to rings that remember important dates and remind you by heating up, but of all these curious items the these barbed wire bracelets and necklaces certainly look the least comfortable – though in actuality they are made of rubber as well as stainless steel.

Available from Ricterstudion Inc., whose website certainly leaves you in no doubt that they have a political point to make via these products, these hand made items, known as American Wear Gulags, come in a variety of barbed flavours with each serving to represent certain injustices. A percentage of each sale is also being donated to an unnamed human rights organisation.

What does this site and Saturn have in common? The answer is rings – as both Saturn and this site have more than their fair share of them. At Thoughts from the Sidelines we are no strangers to rings, indeed we have featured more than a few of the more bizarre creations currently available – from rings with memory and rings that transmit a virtual business cards on a simple handshake to rings that could give you that extra loving boost whenever you may need it courtesy of a hidden Viagra pill (no, really).

The time has come, then, to offer a post dedicated to even more items of hand jewelery that slips just outside of the norm as far as styling is concerned for that extra “wow” factor. After all, let’s face it, on the whole rings are rather boring items that seem, in the main, wholly devoid of character. But, as I hope to show in this post, this need not be the case.
