7. Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch

Heavily featured throughout the latter installments of the James Bond series, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch offers a self-winding chronometer, co-axial escapement movement, water resistance to 2000 feet and a rhodium-plated finish. It might have even stood up to what Salt herself might have put it through. Oh, and special note–one of these is actually up for auction on eBay right this second. You’ve got roughly twenty days left, so go have a look if you want one.

6. The Sony 007 Spy Pack

This current collector’s edition brought together just about anything anyone interested in surveillance or information gathering (just like Salt managed to do nicely with the subway tunnels around the church), mostly because it managed to load an unsettlingly large amount of hardware in one convenient briefcase package. The full loadout included a VAIO TX series laptop with privacy filter, a Cyber-shot DSC-T50B digital camera, and an attache case to keep it all in.

5. The exploding rat

Considering how Salt got out of her first scrape with the CIA in the first place, she probably would have been right at home with the exploding rat. You saw a version of this in the movie Wanted, but originally, in the waning days of World War II, the Special Operations Executive branch of the British military developed a way to secret explosives inside rodents and send them into German military facilities to wreak havoc. And that’s the kind of thing no one pays attention to…until it’s too late.

4. Compass button

When Salt emerges from the Potomac River toward the end, I just about bet she’d want to know a quick and easy way to get back to civilization, warmth and dry clothes. Also developed during the 1940s for the British military, the compass button looked like your typical jacket button, but were magnetized in such a way that, when used together, they functioned like a compass.

3. Mobile phone stun gun

This item is actually really interesting, and definitely would’ve been one for Salt to have on hand. It’s not an actual mobile phone–sadly, there’s no app yet for temporarily electrocuting an attacker–but it’s a million volt stun gun that’s shaped just like a mobile phone. Being as these are illegal in some states, you’ll have to do your own research as to whether or not you’re one of them, but for those of you who are allowed by law to have them, it’s one that you hope you never need, but just might. Especially if you find yourself in as many desperate situations as Evelyn Salt, and if you’ve got $39.95 on hand, it may be worth your time.

2. The pepper spray ring

A quick dose of irony here–Evelyn Salt spent a lot of her childhood kissing a man’s ring. So it’s not exactly a big surprise that she’d want to have a ring of her own on hand. And it’s even better if that ring fires a cloud of noxious, choking pepper spray. The pepper spray used in this ring is, roughly, four hundred times stronger than that of a jalapeno pepper (2000000 SHU against the jalapeno’s 5000 SHU, where SHU is the standard for heat perception rating), so a quick jolt of this will leave most anyone a choking, gasping wreck. And you can get one of these for $27.95.

1. The high voltage briefcase

Now, clearly, Evelyn Salt didn’t have a lot of documents to keep safe with her whilst running from the CIA in a bid to winkle out hidden Russian traitors, but if she did, she definitely would have wanted to have one of these on hand. It not only comes in regular or imitation PVC leather, it also emits a 30000 volt pulse, which can both be activated on the unit itself or set to go off via remote, thus ensuring that anyone who lays hands on your precious documents that isn’t you gets a good solid jolt–unless they thought ahead sufficiently far to get rubber gloves before handling it. And you can have one of these for about $400 here.

Of course, we’ve all seen loads of other fantastic devices that Evelyn Salt would have no doubt loved to have on hand when she was tackling simultaneously the forces of the CIA and the entire Russian espionage corps, but these are seven of them that would do the job nicely, and the best part is, they actually exist in one form or another.

I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of all those watches out there with their hands and easy-to-read numbers. I am so over being able to find out what time it is with just a simple glance. I want to be challenged. I want to be able to feel like I accomplished something when someone asks me for the time. The latest watch design from our friends over at NOOKA is called the ZEM and it certainly won’t hold your hand when it comes to giving you the time of day.

NOOKA appears to be a rather diverse company. They not only sell watches but it looks like they also make perfume. Hey, who am I to judge? All I know is that their watch designs are definitely an acquired taste. Their latest creation, the ZEM, is one of those watches. Apparently, they feel like we’ve been coddled for much too long with our watches. The ZEM doesn’t use hands or your typical digital display to provide the time. It uses a series of dots and slashes to indicate the hour and minutes respectively.

Now I really couldn’t tell from the images on their website, but it’s my guess that if there is one gray dot that means one o’clock and since there are 13 graduations on the minute read-out I assume that’s one for every five minutes (including zero, of course). Anyway, at least they’ve provided an AM/PM indicator and what looks like a seconds counter. I think you’ll have to buy your own so you can figure it out. Me? I think I’ll just keep using my cell phone.

The ZEM line consist of NOOKA’s four most popular faces: Zot, ZenV, ZenH, and Zoo. Each of the faces comes in both night (black) and silver and features a weighted case-back. The bands come in black leather and black or silver high-gauge stainless steel. The NOOKA ZEM is available for pre-order only at www.nooka.com and it’ll cost you $375. Expect them to start shipping sometime in early November.

Whilst Bluetooth headsets have come a long way in terms of design and aesthetics they manage, still, in the main, to reside just out of the cool envelope so this designer concept Bluetooth headset, known as the Volution, conceived of by Chinese designer Fandi Meng certainly caught our eye in seemingly fusing the functionality of wireless connectivity with designer jewellery.

Hardly breaking with established tradition, details concerning the Volution Bluetooth headset concept are on the particularly sparse side of almost non-existent but, as can be seen from the mini gallery of imagery below, the Volution appears to consist of a central illuminating button (known as the ‘pearl’) that glows on receipt of an incoming call – not that the end-user will actually be able to see it glowing – which is simply duly depressed to start/stop said call.

There’s no word as to whether Fandi Meng’s Volution Bluetooth Headset concept will ever actually see the light of day as a commercial product – indeed it would appear that a working prototype is not even in evidence – but there’s no doubt that the design offers a tantalising glimpse into the (possible) future of Bluetooth headsets and there (once again, potential) fusion with jewellery design.

Watches are definitely a fashion statement. Just like you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear, a watch can certainly be an indicator of cool as well. When I laid eyes upon the latest creation of hyper-chic watchmakers, URWERK, I was floored. The URWERK UR-CCI, or King Cobra as it’s known in the timepiece trade, is every bit the head turner. It was supposedly inspired by some kind of 1960s speedometer and it is the perfect combination of technology and testosterone laden design elements.

URWERK are known for their cutting-edge and in your face designs. They won’t shy away from a challenge and if bucking trends were a hobby they’d certainly be the fan club presidents. The UR-CC1 is certainly playing to their strengths. The UR-CC1 makes use of two horizontal indicators displayed by two retrograde cylinders: one for the hour, the other for the minutes. And like you had any question about the complexity of its inner-workings…the UR-CC1 is the result of more than three years of research, development, production and testing. Most of the time was spent making sure that the rotation and instant fly-back of the large hour and minute cylinders was achieved without screwing with the watch’s accuracy.

For those of you that speak watch – a vertical triple-cam operating a rack (visible through a window in the side of the case) rotates the minute cylinder. From zero to 60 minutes, the minute cylinder rotates through 300-degrees. Upon arriving at the 60-minute mark the cylinder instantly (1/10th of a second) reverses back to its original position thanks to an extra-flat linear spring. The retrograde movement of the minute cylinder triggers the hour cylinder to advance (jump) one complete hour. The triple-cam is crafted from bronze beryllium, a metal selected for its inherently self-lubricating properties and low co-efficient of friction, and takes the form of three small inclines.

Now doesn’t all that watch talk just have you ready to run to the store to pick one up? Just by looking at this thing I’m pretty sure that only sultans and Hollywood celebrities can afford the UR-CC1 so I won’t bother going into details about how I don’t have any information on how much it costs. Norwegian jewellers Thomas Heyerdahl have unveiled their latest creation, following on in the footsteps of previous creations such as their diamond encrusted iPod Shuffle, in the form of the Nokia N8800 Diamond which serves to transform a standard Nokia N8800 Arte into a strictly limited edition handset with serious bling appeal and, accordingly, a somewhat substantial price tag.

Available in a strictly limited edition run of a mere 100 units, with each being provided with engraved numbering on the reverse, the Nokia N8800 Diamond sports no less than 112 diamonds totalling 0.7 carats arranged on the phone’s casing and, whilst we’re not particularly enamoured with such ‘blinged out’ gadgets (in the main, they tend to look overtly brash) we have to say that Heyerdahl have realised the N8800 Diamond beautifully.

Due to retail for around $6000 each on a strictly first come first served bases when they become available in selected Norwegian outlets, the first numbered edition is reserved for sale by auction should you wish to put in your bid.

Regular readers will be well aware that we have never particularly liked ‘blinged-out’ gadgets here on TFTS and, if anything, its devices such as this limited edition Adamant USB flash drive made from solid gold and featuring three diamonds that serve to underpin why we don’t see our perspective changing any time soon.

Apart from looking genuinely shoddy – a personal opinion, but one we cannot simply ignore – the Adamant USB Flash Drive may well boast a solid gold case and three embedded diamonds but if this is supposed to automatically render the device desirable someone somewhere obviously seems to be of the misguided opinion that the monetary value of an item is paramount with style coming in at a distant second.

Apparently created ‘for people with a safe taste, style sensibility and sense of extraordinary’ (sic) those that even vaguely consider forking out a breathtaking $5650 on such a truly hideous looking device can at least feel reassured that they obviously have more money than sense which, all said and done, is not a bad situation to find yourself in. (Incidentally, in offering just 16GB of storage space, this works out at a mere $353 per GB).

(Apologies for the poor image quality. Apparently this $5650 flash drive doesn’t merit spending a couple of minutes crafting half decent imagery if the product site is anything to go by).

Regular readers will know that, in the main, we have never particularly warmed to ‘blinged-out’ gadgets or jewel encrusted gadget accessories (and that’s putting it mildly) and, to be brutally honest, we see no reason as to why we should go making any exceptions as far as this Handcrafted Gold & Diamond iPhone Case from CaseMate is concerned.

Of course it ultimately boils down to question of taste, and, as far as it goes, we can only offer our opinions of this particularly gaudy Apple iPhone case – though you may, of course, think it’s the best thing since sliced bread – but we think its just about the most vulgar accessory we’ve ever come across (and we’ve come across some especially vulgar items in our ceaseless toil to bring you content here on TFTS).

This embodiment of what we’ll subsequently term as ‘iVulgarity’ consists of an 18K gold case featuring no less than 42 hand mounted diamonds (totalling 3.2 carats) and, thankfully, it’s a strictly limited edition so the chances of us ever seeing it in the flesh, so to speak, is fairly remote.

It’s hardly as if we needed yet more evidence that items that so patently strive for that ‘blinged-out’ look invariably loose any sense of style or desirability but, just in case we hadn’t laboured our perspective on the matter enough, we present you with what is undoubtedly our closing argument.

Our apologies to any of you who lust over such objects, but, the way we see it is that the only value we could place on this hideous monstrosity of a case is purely monetary – to the tune of some $20,000 – though that’s not to undermine the craftsmanship involved.

We had to do several double takes as far as this diamond and ruby encrusted lure is concerned on the basis that we felt certain that we had fallen prey to an especially far fetched lack of sleep induced hallucination but, having slapped ourselves around the face a few times (the wife seemed unusually eager to assist) and having duly checked the alcohol content of our beer we can confirm that some things are indeed stranger than fiction.

Regular readers will have long since come to the understandable assumption that we are going to dislike this item with a passion and a vigour of such magnitude that your screen is liable to implode (ok, unlikely, but should this be the case we accept no liability whatsoever) but, here’s the rub. We don’t.

How can we? After all we now think we have at last seen the wider picture in the ongoing trend to cover just about everything in precious metals and/or gem stones – and we’re shocked that it’s taken us so long to understand precisely what’s going on here.

There is, we now believe, a concerted effort on behalf of some underground, international group to wholly devalue any ingredient that could be considered a prerequisite of bling, if not of its monetary value then, at the very least, of its desirability. And, the simplest way to accomplish this is to use precious metals and gem stones in some of the most ludicrous manners conceivable to the point where presenting the woman of your dreams a ring fashioned with a glass imitation stone housed in a tin band will be seen as an overt compliment from someone with discerning taste.

We’ve seen gold iPods and jewel laden Nokia N95’s – to name but a few – and now, surely a masterstroke, this diamond and ruby encrusted big game fishing lure valued at a startling $1 million.

And, as if this were not startling enough – we like it. Has the world gone mad? Inexorably so it would seem – and we have every intention of blending seamlessly in on the basis of ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em).

It’s hard to explain why we like this having previously slated other items of the same ilk without sounding wholly hypocritical – but we’ll have a go (my apologies in advance).

As a lure we find it totally absurd – and in truth, it stands for everything we despise about so many things: unfettered greed, the growing divide between ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ and the evolving sense that blatant, overbearing, obnoxious displays of wealth is some new kind spiritualism when in fact it has more akin to porn.

As an object, however, it has a curious beauty and there can be little doubting the degree of craftsmanship involved in its production (the lure consists of 3lbs of gold and platinum and around 100 carets of set diamonds and rubies). It really is exquisite – though rather more so as an item of jewellery than a $1 million big game lure.

Have we convinced you that we’re not hypocrites? No, I thought not as we can hardly convince ourselves.

Perhaps it’s just better to admit to liking it without fully understanding why.

At the risk of offending what we would hope to be a minority of our readership, yet again we have another blinged out otherwise fairly humdrum gadget designed, it would seem, to bolster the fragile egos of those who we cannot help but feel have such shallow lives that all they can do is define themselves according to their wealth but who, in so doing, only serve to display a abject lack of style and taste and a distinct absence of self-worth.

We apologise to those of you staring at the above image who happen to be overcome by desire, but really, at the end of the day, this is just a Nokia N95 cell phone dressed in a fancy (albeit expensive) ball gown. Period.

Thankfully, this diamond encrusted 8GB N95 from Amosu is an exclusive limited edition as this, and the price tag of £12,000, will act to limit – to the tune of 10 – just how many of these monstrosities circulate amongst us.

Still, if you have £12K burning a whole in your pocket and you feel the need to display your wealth in a wholly tacky fashion we don’t doubt that this blinged out gadget will fit the bill perfectly whilst reassuring the rest of us that, whilst you may well be doing ok for yourself, there really is no accounting for taste.

Alternatively, you could spend a little time checking out just what you can buy for this sort of money that will genuinely make us mere mortals swoon (personally, we’d opt for the experience of exceeding Mach 1 in a fighter jet for a comparable fiscal outlay).

Perhaps it’s me, but it would seem that the very idea of bling is rapidly mutating into a hideous, grotesque parody of itself?

Unfortunately, this Gold Bar Gas Lighter is not actually made from real gold, but from aluminum with a gold painted coating which will no doubt chip away within the first week, but you can’t have everything in life can you?

Nor is it a spy gadget, unlike this previously featured Spy Camera Zippo but then, let’s face it, the chances are that you don’t have a license to kill and havn’t got off with Jane Seymour either.

All of us, at some time or other, have found ourselves tucking something away that will serve to trigger memories of someone who, for whatever reason, we would like to remember – be it a lock of hair, a concert ticket or even a well thumbed Decree Nici.

The items in question come in a range of styles and in a variety of forms – from pendants to bracelets and even earrings – thus allowing you to keep a small part of their breath and wear it about your person, which is handy; as if the world’s air supply suddenly pops off into space the air contained with these charms could be used to stay alive just a millisecond longer than anyone else – including the person you took the breath from. We’ve featured our fair share of curious jewellery on Thoughts from the Sidelines, such as the ring with memory and the multi-piece BLT ring (to name two of many), but it’s been a while since we’ve posted concerning any wacky jewellery items, so let’s rectify that straight away with this rather curious Earthworm Bracelet.

Whilst you could make your own, natural alternative to this earthworm bracelet by locating a dead worm and gluing the length of its body to a suitably sized elastic band (hey presto), I’ll warrant that it won’t look quite as fetching as this solid silver Earthworm Bracelet from the Bittersweet New York Store website.

That said, my proposed, admittedly pale imitation won’t cost you $220 either.

A percentage of each sale is also being donated to an unnamed human rights organisation.

The time has come, then, to offer a post dedicated to even more items of hand jewelery that slips just outside of the norm as far as styling is concerned for that extra “wow” factor. After all, let’s face it, on the whole rings are rather boring items that seem, in the main, wholly devoid of character. But, as I hope to show in this post, this need not be the case.

The BLT Ring

This highly original, somewhat tongue in cheek ring that allows you to wear an entire BLT sandwich – made up of its separate components – on your finger. Consisting of five individual rings – the bacon ring, the lettuce ring and the tomato ring all sandwiched (excuse the pun) between two bread rings – this somewhat curious item is available at $150 USD in Sterling Silver or $750 USD in gold. Without doubt this is the most expensive BLT you’ll ever pay for.

The Two in One Ring

In all honesty, the name does not do this ring any justice at all – which is a shame as I think that this is probably one of the most inspired ring designs I have ever come across. Available from Schmuck-Kunst in either stainless steel, stainless steel and silver or stainless steel and gold this is in essence two rings that slot together to form a whole (which, for a wedding ring, is obviously highly metaphoric).

These rings will set you back from 2000 to 3500 Swiss francs (£847 – £1355 / $1571 – $2514 USD).

The Silver and Concrete Ring

This site offers a host of rings that stray from the established norm in ring design which, lets face it, is hardly a bad thing. Of the numerous designs available via this site this one stuck me as being particularly noteworthy.

Created by the designer Karen Konzuk, this is an urban ring in every way, mixing traditional silver with concrete in a very distinct design which can also be engraved to order, and costs a very reasonable $150 USD.

The Raw Quartz Ring

An increasing trend of late – and one which either works (and works well) or fails miserably – is the exploration of the fusion between the modern and the natural and the rings available via Cosa Fina Jewellery are particularly fine examples of this new trend.

Featuring explicitly modern rings with raw, uncut crystals, these rings serve to celebrate the natural form of semi-precious and non-precious crystal formations and, though they could no doubt cause some considerable damage in the wrong hands (due to the sharpness of the formations), they look truly wonderful.

The ring in the image above is the Raw Quartz ring, which features natural crystal quartz embedded into a 14 caret peach gold ring and it will set you back $1700 USD. Another ring on Thoughts from the Sidelines? One could be forgiven for thinking that I am suffering from somewhat of an obsession with hand jewellery. Be that as it may, it would appear that rings are very much the focus of designers at the moment and the Information Ring is another fascinating concept that brings a new level of functionality to this (let’s be honest here) otherwise mundane piece of bodily adornment.

They say first impressions count and that many a judgment is made on a handshake and, with the Information Ring you can be sure that you make a lasting impression.

Created by the designer Hideaki Matsui, the Information Ring will exchange an electronic business card between other Information Rings when in close proximity – such as during a handshake – so the information can be stored and retrieved by the wearer at a later, more convenient time (a time when the wearer may otherwise have forgotten your name completely).

Powered by the heat generated by your own skin, hence not requiring cumbersome batteries, once electronic business cards have been exchanged remotely via a simple handshake the ring can be inserted into a display card that will then offer a full, virtual representation of the transferred data that can either just be viewed or stored.

A fascinating concept, though it does presuppose that the other person is also wearing an Information Ring for the concept to work which could, in all honesty, be the concepts downfall – which is a shame.

And whilst admittedly it may not be the most fetching piece of jewellery to be featured on Thoughts from the Sidelines, this could one day prove to be the most worthwhile investment you have ever made, as it could just save you from the hands of an attacker.

As you may have already guessed, the Stunning Ring is a personal protection device designed to repel a close quarters attack with its inbuilt pepper spray canister.
