And while many are beginning to wonder what the implications of such impressive technology are (some call these the forerunners of the replicator technology from the Star Trek series), one implication has become crystal clear thanks to some doctors in Belgium: medical prosthesis manufacture.

You’re reading this right, folks: basically, doctors in Belgium printed off a new jaw for a patient. An 83 year old woman, found suffering from progressive osteomyelitis (which pretty much was set to destroy her entire mandible structure, or jaw for those of you who don’t remember your high school biology classes very well), had the entire jaw removed and replaced with a prosthetic. But it’s how the prosthetic was made that’s the really interesting part.

Using a combination of technologies from Xilloc and LayerWise, a medical implant maker and a metal additive maker respectively, doctors then used computer-aided design technology common in a variety of businesses today to create a new lower jaw using a 3D printer. And while most consumer-model 3D printers use plastic or resin, which would have been largely ineffective at replicating bone, these doctors used powdered titanium, which did the job just fine.

The end result was a jaw every bit as tough as a normal bone model, but weighing just a little more (it weighs in, reportedly, at 107 grams). In fact, the procedure went so well that the patient had full mandibular control again, including speaking and swallowing, in less than a day after the operation was completed.

The implications here are astonishing; custom-printed prosthetic devices, done in a doctor’s office, in such rapidity and so fluidly that it can almost be done on an outpatient basis? It’s the start of something amazing, I’d say, and it may well go a good way toward fixing some of the problems we find ourselves having as far as health care goes. But the process is still in the early stages; when we can print, say, an artificial heart or liver, then we’ll be in business. But a jaw is a great start, and hopefully one which will be built on.

So what do you guys think here? Figure the new jaws are a great start, or just a gimmick? The model is the Doxie Go + Wi-Fi and as the name implies — it comes complete with built-in Wi-Fi. The scanner is available as of now and will not only allow for regular document scanning, but will also take advantage of the Wi-Fi and allow for uploads to some of the more popular cloud services.

That being said, the Doxie Go + Wi-Fi is priced at $239. For that price you will get the following; the scanner itself along with the companion software which has “award-winning ABBYY OCR.” In other words, it will scan your documents and turn them into searchable PDF files. Additionally, you can expect to find a bundled Eye-Fi wireless SD memory card and the Doxie 2.1 software. Lastly, there is also an iOS sync app which can be downloaded directly from the iOS App Store.

Moving past the price and what you can expect to find in the box and into the features. The Doxie Go + Wi-Fi scanner features the ability to scan in just 8 seconds per page and at up to 600 dpi. There is also a built-in battery, memory chip and Wi-Fi. The last item in that last sentence seems to be key here. With the wireless connectivity you will be able to instantly send any scans to the cloud. In terms of where the scans can be sent, that list includes Evernote, Dropbox, Flickr and FTP along with your Mac and/or PC computer or a mobile device such as an iPhone or iPad.

Otherwise, a break down of some of the other features include the following;

Wi-Fi sends scans instantly: Doxie joins your Wi-Fi network and sends scans on the fly. On the go, Doxie creates its own ad-hoc network.

Instant push to the cloud: Doxie sends your scans automatically to your computer, mobile device, or directly to Evernote, Flickr, FTP, and more.

Direct sync with Phone & iPad: Grab the free Wi-Fi sync app from the App Store for fast, wireless scanning direct to your iPhone or iPad.

Built-in battery and memory: Scan in full color at up to 600 dpi. And with a battery, memory, and Wi-Fi, you can scan and sync anywhere.

Powered by Eye-Fi: Doxie Go + Wi-Fi includes wireless technology from Eye-Fi(TM), the industry leader in wireless image sync.

Doxie 2.1 for Mac + PC: Doxie 2.1 is included – sync and create searchable PDF files. Just sync, staple, and send to local apps or the cloud.

iPhone & iPad Sync App: Sync scans directly to your photo roll. Organize, e-mail, or use scans in iOS apps like Dropbox and Evernote.

HP Partners With Conde Nast, Will Begin Sending Magazines To Your Printer [HP Will Get You From Both Ends, Partners With Conde Nast To Use All Your Printer Ink & Launches "Ink Delivery Service" To Keep You Stocked Up]

Computers & Computing

Net Resources

Printers & Scanners

Coming with two announcements that sound like they were created specifically for the other, HP has offered up the details on their new partnership with Conde Nast for “on-demand content distribution” as well as their new ink delivery service dubbed HP Instant Ink. Needless to say, before we make fun of this any longer, lets get into what exactly it is.

Beginning with the details on the partnership with Conde Nast, this is a digital-to-print service which will allow you to have content from some of your “favorite brands” send directly to your printer. Some of the brands that you can have printed include Allure, Details, Epicurious, Glamour, Golf Digest, Self and Wired. And while there is nothing mentioned in terms of pricing for this option, it looks like it will be offered only at no additional charge for current subscribers.

Next up is the service you are bound to need if you take advantage of the Conde Nast offering. This is the HP Instant Ink delivery service. The price for this will be anywhere from $5.99 up to $10.99 per month “depending on the product line.” As to what you will get for your monthly subscription, according to HP;

“HP Instant Ink delivers Original HP Ink cartridges to the home or office when needed. Users may receive up to 50 percent annual savings on ink cartridge purchases for one low monthly fee.”

That all being said, the Conde Nast on-demand content offering as well as the HP Instant Ink program will both kick off “on a trial basis later this fall.”

webOS to Live on in Internet-Connected Printers – HP [Even with HP Getting Out of the PC & Tablet Business, webOS Will Make a Grand Return in HP Business-Oriented Designjet Printers]

J. While still the leading PC manufacturer by volume, HP says the hardware industry is a low-margin business, and they thought it will be better off to focus on a high-margin business like enterprise services and software. Likewise, the HP TouchPad wasn’t doing too well in the tablet market, considering the dominance of Apple’s iPad, as well as the rising popularity of Honeycomb-based Android tablets.

These notwithstanding, HP has decided to push through with its plan to incorporate webOS in its business-grade printers. In an interview with Pocket-Lint at the HP Impact event in Dublin, HP representatives say webOS powered printers will start hitting the market by 2012. “HP is currently investigating using WebOS on its Designjet range of professional printers,” says the HP rep.

This is in line with former CEO Mark Hurd’s statement that webOS will go beyond smartphones, and will appear in “form factors such as slates and web-connected printers.” There’s no confirmation yet whether webOS will likewise be incorporated into consumer-grade printers, too, although this is also likely.

The fire sale that made HP TouchPads fly off the shelf proved, that webOS still had a market, although this was mostly due to the deeply discounted prices ($99 to $149, depending on storage capacity). Still, webOS gained some user base. That being said, the part that has us scratching our head is whether this has happened just at this one location or is happening at all Best Buy locations.

With that, the details that we have received so far is that employees of a Charlotte Best Buy were given an HP Veer 4G and unspecified model of printer. And given them for free. According to the details, the employees were given a training session on the devices and the giveaway occurred at the closing.

The initial report came from Twitter user @danielrushing;

#HP just gave us all a free printer and the new HP Veer cell phone! #thatswhatimtalkingbout

And I must say, as a webOS fan (and user) I am more than a little jealous. But that aside, we can only hope that this will continue with other Best Buy locations as well, because after all, if you give a Veer 4G to a bunch of people they are bound to talk about it. Nothing like giving phones away to get people to talk. Of course, HP should hope they like what they were given for this type of marketing to be truly effective.

If nothing else, this could help translate to sales, that is assuming the employees actually use the Veer on a regular basis because people often talk about items they have and use. Plus, putting the phone into their hands (and again assuming they use it) means they will become very familiar with the features and how it all works. In other words, they should be able to talk up webOS, and the Veer, Pre 3 and TouchPad to potential customers.

HP ePrint Printers Now Offer Google Cloud Print Right Out Of The Box [Printing Your Documents Just Became A Lot Easier On HP's ePrint Printer Line]

Computers & Computing

Printers & Scanners

Let’s face it, folks, the dream of the “paperless office” will, for most of us, be only just a dream for the foreseeable future. Oh, sure, we’ve made great strides since the mid-nineties when the whole telecommuting thing really got going in earnest, but for the most part, the world hasn’t given up its printer paper, and likely won’t. But with HP’s ePrint line of printers, printing just got a whole lot easier.

HP ePrint printers now come right out of the box enabled with Google’s Cloud Print service, meaning that you don’t need to hook up your printer to a computer, or a server or what have you, in order to get your documents turned from easily stored electronic format to dead tree editions. We all knew that ePrint printers were looking to do some great things anyway, as in getting their instructions straight from email, but now they’ve actually taken a step up with this new service.

I haven’t had the opportunity to actually use one of these, but it seems almost too simple for its own good; just get your machine’s email address–it ends in @hpeprint.com–and then, send stuff to it. It won’t read it and file it or delete it like most people do with email, but rather, just print out whatever you sent it.

No hooking up cables, no drivers, no print setup…just fire your document into the cloud and watch it get turned magically into leaves of compressed tree corpse.

Call me crazy, but I like this idea. As someone who switches computers a lot, going from desktop to laptop then back to desktop then replacing a desktop that just spontaneously used its speakers one afternoon to shriek “No mas!” before a pop and a hiss from the motherboard, I would love to just know my printer will follow me to my next computer and beyond. There are actually several models available that offer the service, reportedly including several models in the Photosmart, the Envy and the OfficeJet lines.

CES 2011 LIVE: CES Unveiled Catchup [TFTS LIVE at CES 2011 Unveiled Press Event (For Those That Missed It)]

Computers & Computing

Hard Disks & Solid State Drives

PCs, Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets

Printers & Scanners

Missed our live coverage direct from the CES 2011 Unveiled press event? I’m off to find the conference hall. Stay tuned!

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:49:00 PST

The Lexmark Genesis is on sale at Bestbuy.com right now for 9. Lexmark tells me that it’ll be available in other retail outlets later in the month.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:47:51 PST

Overall, it was a cool printer. Piano black, the vertical design looked to take up less space than a regular all-in-one. The real feature, in my mind, is the extremely quick scanning. It takes 3 seconds, as opposed to the conventional way of scanning – 15 to 30 seconds. Awful, really. This is amazing stuff.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:45:23 PST

Here’s a shot of the scanning bay

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:44:11 PST

Aside from that, it prints pictures. They had some samples printed out, looked impressive.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:43:45 PST

I believe the Lexmark guy said that the scan resolution is 3000 dpi (high, I know). They didn’t have any press materials on hand, but the Lexmark staff is supposed to email me more information, stay tuned.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:42:16 PST

If you want to do a preview of what your scan is like, it takes 1 second (literally, 1 second) and shows you on the little LCD display. To scan it before printing, it takes 3 seconds. The sensors take several images in different colors, and that’s how it’s able to go so quickly.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:40:56 PST

It doesn’t use the normal scanning technology, it uses a 10-megapixel CCD sensor to scan whatever paper you put in there.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:40:30 PST

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:39:10 PST

I know what you’re thinking, if you’ve seen one all in one, you’ve seen them all. To be honest, the screen wasn’t that impressive, it seemed to fail to pickup the actions from the guy’s stylus or finger. I’ll have to get my hands on it on the show floor and announce some more stuff.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:30:35 PST

I couldn’t grab an screenshot, but it’s basically the iPhone-Android interface. Big icons on a menu – perfect for touch. You can assign any app to it, the Lenovo guy had Chrome, paint, etc. assigned to icons. You also can have separate tabs or pages of applications. The example the Lenovo guy gave was have one page for work, one page for home. Sort of like multiple home screens on iOS or Android.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:28:33 PST

As regular TFTS readers will know, we aren’t fans of desktop operating system on touchscreen devices. Nice of Lenovo to include the option (like the GTab). It’ll be interesting to see what Apple does with the next iPAd.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:25:58 PST

It’ll be coming with a built in-3G model. They aren’t talking about what bands and they say that they are in talks with major mobile carriers across the world. Pricing isn’t announced, it’s dependent on any possible carrier deals. But you can expect it to be out in H1 2011.

TFTS CES 2011 LIVE COVERAGE | Update @ 18:24:44 PST

Lenovo is promising 6 hours of battery life when web browsing. It features a flatbed scanner that doubles as a photo copier. Like the printer-only option, the CLX-3185FW also connects to the network via WiFi, and features a one-touch setup system. The printer also has an eco-copy functionality, which lets you quickly make copies in eco-mode, so that you save on paper and ink.

Both Samsung printers are environmentally-friendly, using less power than their predecessors, and using less toner whenever possible. But since we’ve been hearing that the paperless office was coming Real Soon Now since they first started talking about it almost twenty years ago, we all know that having a hard copy around is still a necessary everyday function. And thus we talk about Samsung’s pair of new wireless printers, the Samsung CLX-318FX and the Samsung CLP325P.

Both the Samsung CLP-325W and the Samsung CLX-3185FW boast speeds of up to 17 pages per minute in black and white, slowing down to four pages per minute when printing in color. They’re both geared toward smaller spaces, and offer Wi-Fi connectivity, AnyWeb Print software which lets you just print the information you need (no more printing banner ads when you need to print a web page), and with the more advanced CLX-318FW, you’ll also be able to copy, scan, fax and print, which is pretty much everything useful that you can do with a document short of making paper airplanes out of them.

Even better, the new printer will average between a thousand and 1500 pages total life, and they use 35 percent less electricity in their manufacture, so if you want a greener printer then you’ve got a good start right here.

Not surprisingly, there’s a pronounced difference in pricing between the two: the simpler CLP-325W is available at $199.99 and the more powerful CLX-318FW will come your way at $399.99.The prices are pretty good, though I’ve seen better, but the efficiency looks like it’d make it worth your while if you needed a higher-end muscle printer for business. You’ll have a while to shop around, though, as these won’t even hit shelves until the middle of January, at last report, so keep your eyes out for these if you do a lot of printing.

Fragrance Jet II Gets Tested, May Be Fit Into Cell Phones [Keio University Develops Tool To Help Hospitals Measure Patients' Sense Of Smell, Could Be Shrunk to Cell Phone Size]

Mobile/Cell Phones

Printers & Scanners

Give the folks at Keio University credit for trying to improve humanity–they’re still working on the Fragrance Jet II, a device made from the same technology as your inkjet printer. But the device originally designed to help doctors measure a patient’s sense of smell has a strange other side–it may well one day replace the ringtone, as it’s got some potential for being slipped into cell phones.

Since the Fragrance Jet II works about the same way as an inkjet printer does, it has the ability to fire intermittent pulses of fragrance very rapidly, which in turn can help measure at just what level of pulse the patient can detect the smell. And that’s why the Keio University crew set this thing up in the first place: to allow for the accurate measuring of the strength of a sense of smell. They knew that the sense of smell declines as we age, and with a device like this, they can measure just how far down that particular rabbit hole goes. Also, this helps in so-called “sick house syndrome”, in which people are affected by the contents of their houses, as it’s said to affect the sense of smell first.

Now, here’s the part that means much to us–the folks out at Keio think that this has a whole other use no one was thinking much about. Namely, the capability to shrink it down and install it in cell phones. Basically, it would make your phone emit a certain smell when someone called, for instance, if your grandmother gave you a call on your mobile, your phone might suddenly burst out into the smell of chocolate chip cookies, just like she used to bake.

And of course, if your ex-wife happened to call, your phone might suddenly smell like sour milk and old sweatsocks, but hey!

I wouldn’t look for this any time soon, but it’s still an interesting idea for several different reasons.

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: Computer Hardware [Amazon's Blank DVD Spools, Epson Workhorse Printer, and HP Desktops Can Make The Season Bright For Your Computer Buff]

Computers & Computing

PCs, Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets

Printers & Scanners

USB Devices

Chances are that somewhere in your life is a computer enthusiast. Why? Simple. First, it does everything it’s possible to do with documents: it prints, it scans, and it even faxes if you have places to send faxes to. And you can rest assured that, sometimes, the only way you can get in touch with some people is by fax. Second, it’s fast–it prints a page every four seconds in black and white, or almost every ten seconds in color. Oh, and for the real high point: Amazon will sell you one of these for $98.50. So if you do anything with documents, you’ll want an Epson WorkForce 610 on hand.

Sceptre X370BV-HD LCD Television / Monitor $449.99

We actually just talked about this one not so long ago, and it makes the list because it’s probably one of the better computer monitors you’re going to find out there. This suite of applications brings a word processor, spreadsheet, and other collaboration tools to the Web browser, for free. This means that users will be able to print directly to Cloud-aware printers, which let you print to offsite printers, and from any gadget even without a printer driver. Meanwhile, device syncing will mean users will no longer have to use third-party apps to synchronize Docs content with local versions on their Smartphones or tablets.

There are still no details as to how these features will be implemented. However, it is suggested that these might be incorporated in an upcoming Google Chrome OS release for netbooks or smartbooks, which will capitalize on Cloud-based technologies. This might also be a technology that can be incorporated in Android tablets and Smartphones

Printer Cartridges Banned In UK Flights [British Government Bans Printer Cartridges From Hand-Carried Luggage Due To Terrorist Threat]

J. Printer cartridges bigger than 500 grams (about 17.6 oz) are now banned from hand-carried luggage in flights departing from the UK. Cartridges will also be banned from cargo shipments, unless they are from trusted shippers with security clearance.

This stems from a recent tip-off by an Al Qaeda operative about FedEx and UPS shipments from Yemen to the US containing bombs. Explosives were then found stuffed into printer cartridges. The explosive material contained a substance called PETN, which is usually undetectable by X-ray machines, hence the package in question went through undetected prior to the tip.

Given this development, expect airport authorities to be stricter with regard to gadgets, which may extend far beyond printer cartridges.

New Apple iPad (iPad 2) Cameras to be Made by OmniVision? The next-gen iPad, the iPad 2, will probably be announced at some point in early 2011 and it will be available later in stores.

Today we’re not going to confirm that the iPad 2 exist, but to talk about the manufacturer of the next-gen iPad’s camera, which appears to be OmniVision. The company will be in charge of not one but two cameras for the iPad, a front-facing one and a back camera.

That certainly is in line with what we’ve heard before, not to mention that, considering how Apple brought FaceTime to its lines of desktops and laptops, it would be strange to see the iPad 2 come out without FaceTime support and therefore two cameras.

Let’s not also forget that while everyone else is coming out with a first-gen tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the HP Slate 500, the BlackBerry PlayBook and other tablets that are coming out in stores by the end of the year and in early 2011, Apple is going to have a second-generation tablet out, or at least announced. Said device will have to trump the competition and set new standards for the 2011-generation of tablets and it won’t be able to do that without dual camera support.

OmniVision is the CMOS image sensor creator for the iPhone 4 too so it only makes sense to see it come up with similar iPad solutions. The iPad 2 back camera is said to be a 5-megapixel camera, while the front-facing camera will offer VGA quality. Taking pictures and recording video with any tablet seems just a little bit to wild for my taste, but in order for FaceTime to work properly you’d need two cameras on mobile devices like the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

HP Photosmart eStation C510 Printer Is The Android Printer Of Legend [HP's Android Printer Emerges, Named, And Offering Less Than Expected]

Computers & Computing

PCs, Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets

Printers & Scanners

There have been rumors for some time now about an Android-driven printer that’s specifically set up to run with the Zeen tablet, and now, we’ve found that the rumors are true and have taken life in the form of the HP Photosmart eStation C510. The Zeen will not offer Gmail or Android Market access, which is profoundly strange for an Android tablet. As for your internet printing, you’ll only get a curated experience with Facebook, Yahoo and Snapfish.

And worse yet, there are some hardware issues floating around, related to the Zeen’s touchscreen accuracy and a lack of update likelihood to FroYo.

These are expected, currently, to launch September 20th and will set you back $399.99, and interestingly, the Zeen is expected to be offered separately, but no one yet knows for how much.

Canon Has Mysterious Pixma Printer Locked Down At Canon Expo In New York [Mysterious Canon Printer Looks Normal, But Web Can't Figure Out What It Does]

Audio,Visual

Cameras & Camcorders

Printers & Scanners

Printers are, to be frank, a pretty boring part of tech. Until HP starts putting webOS on them, us in the tech blog business really don’t care much about them. So, a mysterious new printer from Canon that is being kept under tight security has really baffled the tech community. What’s the deal here?

The folks at Canon had the average-looking black printer under glass with a timer. It was dubbed the Pixma printer and alleged, Canon reps were asking folks not to take pictures of the camera. (In)famous tech blog Gizmodo snagged a picture and posted it on their site. The timer seemed to be counting down to the date when it was unveiled (and was set for six months away), but Canon didn’t give any hints as to what so special about the Pixma printer.

Not unexpected, the folks at Canon contacted Gizmodo and asked them to take the picture down. Since they’ve already pissed off their quota of first-rate electronics manufacturers this year, Gizmodo compiled. But their artist Sam Spratt made the above image which I’ve included here. For those who didn’t see the picture, that’s basically how it looked.

What could the Canon Pixma printer be? A new sort of printer, different from ink-jet and laser? Does it not use ink? Why would Canon be so secretive not to allow pictures when it’s sitting in the middle of a public expo in the middle of New York City?

Kodak ESP 9250 AIO Inkjet Printer Released [Kodak Unveils a New AIO Inkjet Printer with the Kodak ESP 9205 All-in-One Printer]

Printers & Scanners

Kodak offers a new inkjet printer with the announcement of the Kodak ESP 9250 AIO inkjet printer. And Canon wants to get you hooked on the Selphy CP800.

The Selphy CP800 is a dye sublimation printer that focuses on the 4 x 6 photo, but it can do almost half that size in a pinch, and print a postcard-size photo in just 47 seconds. It weighs a meager two pounds, and can include a battery pack for printing photos on the fly.

It connects to a Mac by USB (no word on if PC versions get to play in this pond too), but it supports all known memory cards as well as USB drives, Pictbridge, and, with optional kit, Bluetooth, making any kind of desktop apparatus largely unnecessary.

The printer itself costs $100, the battery pack will run you $80, Bluetooth connectivity adds $50, and enough ink and paper for 108 4 x 6 prints will set you back $35, making this a pretty low-cost option as far as prints go.

And just in case style’s important, you can get these in either black or white, though the lone issue here is that we don’t know just when it’ll finally make an appearance to buy. Amazon, however, is taking preorders.

Canon Unveils New MG8120 and MG6120 Pixma Wireless Printers [Canon Announces the Release of Two New Pixma Wireless Printers with the MG8120 and MG6120]

Printers & Scanners

Canon announces two new wireless printers for its Pixma lineup with the release of the Canon MG8210 and Canon MG6120 Pixma wireless printers. The device is called the Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner/Converter which is available as of today and comes sporting a $149.99 price tag. That said, aside from a fairly generic sounding name, the scanner itself seems interesting enough.

As for size, its not super small, but at the same time it is able to work with pages up to 8.5 x 11 inches and that is a plus. The overall dimensions are 10.59 (L) x 1.73 (H) x 2.32 (D) with a weight of 13.79 ounces.

And for those wondering, this latest scanner will serve to add to the current Pandigital collection which includes a model that scans up to 5 x 7 inch images and one that scans photos and negatives up to 4 x 6 inches.

But getting back to this latest. In addition to the long and generic sounding name, you can recognize it by a model number of PANSCN06. As for features, the PANSCN06 can be connected to a Mac or Windows computer by way of the miniUSB port and has a 5 in 1 memory card reader which includes the usual suspects such as SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MMS and XD. As for quality of the scans, those are up to 600 optical dpi with a maximum resolution of 3800 x 7200 in 24-bit color.

Overall it seems the scanner is simple to use, just plug it in, turn it on and feed the image though “with a single touch of a button.” Personally I am not sure how many people are still finding the need to scan images often enough to have a standalone device. But that said, given the memory card storage this would serve to make a nice addition to a Pandigital photo frame. After all, you can scan the images to the card then remove the card and place it in the frame.

Once again, the Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner/Converter is available as of today with a purchase price of $149.99.

Canon Japan to Launch New Fingerprint Authentication System Scanners [Canon Adds New Security Feature for Multifunctional Printers to Reduce Use Abuse]

Computers & Computing

Printers & Scanners

Canon revs up its drive to aid Canon photocopiers and multi-functional printer security by announced a new Fingerprint Authentication system to control the authorized personnel to operate such devices. This has to do with this reported scanner which can reportedly scan the pages of a 200-page book inside 60 seconds.

A lot of the credit goes to the 500fps camera that comes with it. With this scanner, you don’t have to lay each page flat on the scanner. You just have to flip the pages under the camera and everything is on automatic.

Also, there is no need to worry about how the pages would look like since there is a software that will do all that for you. In the end, you end up getting clean and readable images that were captured in record time in digital form and ready for use at your liking. One, “scheduled delivery”, allows you to schedule printing of certain things at the same time every day, i.e., chunks of the newspaper at seven in the morning. But the second is a bit less savory–targeted advertising.

In exchange for the convenience of being able to print out the morning paper on demand at the same time every day (because coffee and a laptop at seven in the morning do not mix. ), you’ll pay for it with a variety of ads targeted to your area via IP-sniffing.

Some may balk at this, saying, why should I allow a company to use my printer ink to hawk products at me while I’m trying to get the paper? And they have a good point, but according to HP’s Stephen Nigro, senior VP of HP’s Imaging and Printing Group, this doesn’t matter at all. Why? You’re used to it. Quoth he:

“What we discovered is that people were not bothered by it [an advertisement],” Nigro said. “Part of it I think our belief is you’re used to it. In a little bit of good news, that announcement has come and as expected so did the email address. What that means is simple printing. With these models you will be able to print just by sending an email. Of course, easier printing could mean more printing which will mean spending more money on ink cartridges. But that aside, with these web connected printers you will be able to print from a wide variety of devices including the iPad and iPhone as well as an Android or any other smartphone.

The new support comes by the name of ePrint and to kick things off — HP has rolled out four ePrint capable printers. It used to be that printing was easy, mainly because homes had one computer and a printer which in many cases sat side by side on the same desk. And then as computers left the desk and eventually moved into netbooks, tablets and smartphones printing became not quite so easy.

That said, HP is looking to unveil a new generation of web connected printers that will include goodies such as its own email address. That alone sounds pretty decent, after all, that would mean you could install a printer on your network and then print from any internet connected device that is capable of sending an email. In other words, you could print a document from your smartphone sitting in your living room watching television and have it sitting on the printer waiting when you arrive.

And thankfully they are not stopping there, also mentioned was a partnership with Google that would make things like printing from Google Docs as well as Calendar easier. Of course, given they mentioned two Google services it only seems more than likely that they will eventually roll that out to more Google properties — such as Picasa.

Additionally, Google is not going to be the only planned partner, as of now it was noted that “H.P. has line up 40.” With that, we are still waiting on more official details to come from HP, however these printers are expected to come with a price tag ranging from as low as $99 and as high as $400.

All things considered this seems pretty cool, still, I would worry a little about the ink consumption. After all, you could do some interesting stuff such as subscribe to a PDF magazine or newsletter using your HP printer email and have it automatically print out when its “delivered.” I knew there was a reason I have always liked HP printers.

webOS Coming To Printers [HP CEO Promises webOS Coming To Multiple Devices, Including Web-Connected Printers]

Computers & Computing

Mobile/Cell Phones

Printers & Scanners

That’s right, HP spent $1.2 billion on Palm so they wouldn’t have to write software to run their printers. Joking aside, today during HP’s Q2 earnings call, the HP-Palm deal was a hot topic as you can imagine, and HP CEO Mark Hurd expanded on what HP’s plans are for webOS, and it includes printers.

Shortly after news of the HP-Palm deal were made public, several HP executives made public comments like “We wanted to double down on webOS” and “HP is investing heavily in webOS”. So, we already knew that webOS was a big part of the deal for HP, but Hurd expanded.

Hurd said regarding webOS:

[We acquired Palm] in order to enhance our intellectual property…in the connected-mobility space. We expect to leverage WebOS into a variety of form factors, including slates and Web-connected printers. With a whole series of Web-connected printers, as they connect to the Web, they need an OS.

Don’t make fun of HP – Printers are a big business for them and printing has always been a big part of mainstream computer users. HP’s printer business made $6.4 billion (!) in revenue for HP last year, apart of the total $30 billion in revenues for HP, the world’s largest computer manufacturer.

Remember the old days when printers plugged into the back of your computer via a serial cable and didn’t do anything otherwise? The latest edition is the Stylus NX420 and it comes along with a bargain price of $99.99. Still, bargain priced or not, the Stylus NX420 has a few nice features. Plus, the printer is available as of today, May 5, 2010.

First and foremost here is that the Stylus NX420 has built in support for wireless printing, but more important is that wireless support comes in the form of 802.11 n. Other features of the NX420 include a 1.5 inch LCD display and built in memory card slots for easy printing without the need for a computer.

You will also find other goodies which include one-touch copying, high quality scanning up to 2400 dpi, the ability to reduce and/or enlarge from 25 to 400 percent and ISO print speeds of 6.4 ISO pages per minute in black and 3.3 ISO pages per minute in color. Moving on, the NX420 also has touchup goodies such as the ability to restore old, faded or discolored images and one-click red eye correction.

As for what ships with the printer, you will get the power cord, instruction manual, necessary drivers (on a CD) and four ink cartridges including black, cyan, magenta and yellow. And as expected with most printers — the required USB cable is not included with the purchase so make sure you either purchase new, or save your old.

Moving away from the printer itself and onto the ink — you know, the part that generally costs the big bucks. Like I mentioned, the printer does come with some starter ink, but in terms of replacement cartridges, those were noted as costing “as low as $8.99 per cartridge.”

Finally, the Epson Stylus NX420 can be found with most “major computer, office and electronic superstores, a variety of retail stores nationwide, mail order, PC manufacturers” and of course online with Epson.

HP Now Touting “Plug and Print” Laser Printers [HP Rolls Out Smart Install Which Should Make Installing A Printer An Easy Task]

Printers & Scanners

Printer drivers. And just like that, those two words most likely often confuse and/or anger plenty of people. But thanks to HP, those two words are being replaced by another two — Smart Install. It also seems to be that the HP Smart Install functionality will make installing a printer a simple and easy task.

According to the description given in the press release, the new “plug and print technology” will allow a user “to begin printing in as little as two minutes.” Yup, it looks like HP has removed the dreaded CD that was once required for the printer drivers and setup process and replaced it with simply having to connect a USB cable to your computer. And then once connected, the printer will take care of the rest.

As of now the printers that are offering support for this new feature are the LaserJet Pro P1100 as well as the LaserJet Pro M1130 and M1210 in the Multifunction Printer series. Also included is the LaserJet Pro P1566 and P1606dn. Pricing for these models appears to range from as low as $129 for the LaserJet Pro P1100 and as high as $199 for the LaserJet M1330/M1210 Multifunction Printer series.

Breaking these models down a little further, one of the spec highlights include Auto-On Technology which will automatically wake the printer when a print job is sent as well as shut the printer down after it finishes.

Additionally, the LaserJet Pro P1100 series is being touted as the “most energy-efficient laser printer on the planet” which sounds pretty fancy considering it only comes with a $149 price tag. Other features of the P1100 include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g wireless networking, the ability to print up to 19 pages per minute on letter sized paper, a 150 sheet paper tray and Instant-On technology.

As for availability, the LaserJet Pro P1102w and P1606dn Printers are currently available and the M1100/1200 MFP series is expected to hit the market sometime next month.

HP Officejet 4500 AIO Printer Set for March Release [Officejet 4500 Network Ready WiFi Enabled Printer Aimed at SOHO Users]

Computers & Computing

Printers & Scanners

HP have taken the wraps off their latest AIO printer in the Officejet range, the HP Officejet 4500, which along with offering 4-in-1 functionality, making it particularly suited to SOHO environments, also boasts network friendliness courtesy of both inbuilt 10/100 Ethernet and WiFi connectivity (the latter specifically offered in the [...]

HP have taken the wraps off their latest AIO printer in the Officejet range, the HP Officejet 4500, which along with offering 4-in-1 functionality, making it particularly suited to SOHO environments, also boasts network friendliness courtesy of both inbuilt 10/100 Ethernet and WiFi connectivity (the latter specifically offered in the case of the Officejet 4500 Wireless model).

The HP Officejet 4500 AIO Printer, which is billed as enabling ‘customers to efficiently complete business tasks at their small business or home office’ and which is compatible with both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X Snow Leopard based systems, promises printing speeds of up to six pages per minute whilst its integrated scanner offers a maximum scanning resolution of 1,200×2,400ppi – the scanner also serving to function as a fax.

Along with a 20 page document feeder, the HP Officejet 4500, which is billed as offering a duty cycle of up to 3,000 pages per month, also comes with a 100 sheet capacity paper tray and, aside from being network friendly naturally also (naturally) comes with USB port for those looking to hook the device up directly (should they not have a network in place).

“HP believes in the entrepreneurial spirit and strives to create products that help customers turn their ideas into reality,” said Hatem Mostafa, vice president, Inkjet Business Solutions, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “By delivering an affordable, low-cost-per-page business printer…we can help small businesses around the world affordably maximize productivity and successfully promote their brands.”

Pricing of the new HP Officejet 4500 AIO will start from just $99 when it hits the US sometime this March.

Printers of the Future: Portable, Efficient & While we can read eBooks instead of regular books, buy digital frames instead of printing photos and replace all our printed bills with virtual ones we still require printers. So how will the future of these beasts look like? What kind of printing machines should we employ in order to help save Earth while we’re printing only those words that needed to be printed?

Today we have some versions of the future printer for you. They are all highly portable, a lot more efficient and eco-friendlier than regular printers. But that doesn’t mean we’ll see them in stores today, does it?

First off I’ll show you my favorite design, a portable printer for the busy professional. Sure we have highly portable devices like smartphones, netbooks and tablets at hand and they can help us print wirelessly tons of documents. But the printers themselves are not portable like the Stick POP. This portable printer measures 23cm by 6cm and you can carry it anywhere with you. It offers USB connectivity and an OLED screen on top of the bar that can display printing status. Pretty cool you say? I totally agree.

Moving on to our next concept of the day we find the Pencil Printer. Not quite as portable, the device will definitely do its job. Simply insert a pencil in the appropriate sharpener and the lead will be used for printing your precious documents. That way you won’t be required to use any actual ink. The downside of the process is that the printed words are erasable. In fact, what if I told you that this particular printer can also erase the paper once you don’t need it anymore? Well it can do that so, there, you can “save the tree.”

The last concept is not exactly a printer but it will come in handy putting words on a piece of paper. Assuming that you tech-lovers still like to write the regular, non-keyboard way, I’ll show you the “1+1=1.” I know my math and this has nothing to do with it. It’s a long pencil made up from two stubs united by a piece of rubber. How many stubs do you throw away each year? Well while you wait for the Pencil Printer to arrive, why not save earth this way.

This article would love not to be printed but if you must do so please get one of the two printers we’ve shown you today before pressing print.

Apple iPad Financials: How Much Does Apple Make Off an iPad? Sure these two categories overlap but I still have a couple of points to make.

First off Apple already has a clear fan base that will pretty much go for any Apple product. Most of these products are good but once in a while you get hit by an Apple TV idea or a 27-inch iMac that doesn’t work as it should.

Secondly Apple has already sold way more iPods than it has ever dreamed of. The company has pretty much cashed in on that market and the iPod sales can’t keep going up since so many people have one. Same thing goes for iPhones but I imagine Apple will sell plenty of those at least for a few more years.

So that’s why Apple needs to keep profits up with a new product. Will that product be the iPad? While nothing is official so far it looks like a first estimate on Apple’s profits on every iPad unit sold has been made. And Apple looks like it’s going to be making a very healthy profit on each iPad sold.

This unofficial bill of materials says that Apple pays $270 to make each iPad Wi-Fi while the iPad 3G should cost around $306 to produce. That means that for a 16GB iPad Wi-Fi Apple makes $230 while each 16GB iPad 3G would send Apple around $324. Pretty nice numbers wouldn’t you agree? While we’re waiting for the official BoM you can calculate yourself how much profit Apple makes off the other four iPad versions. Multiply that with a couple of million units sold in the first year and you will get an impressive final number.

So what iPad should you buy? Well, let’s face it, the device is pretty interesting and worth exploring. But since we’re talking about iPad 1.0, a machine that lacks various hardware specs and software features, you could always go for the cheapest version. At $499 the 16GB iPad Wi-Fi is definitely affordable. In fact if you’re thinking about getting a netbook you might want to try the iPad first. Whether you like it or not you could always sell it later and get some of your cash back which in turn you would invest either in a netbook or in the iPad 2G (that’s second-generation of iPads of course.)

Should you get a 3G version? Ask yourself if that’s worth it. Ask yourself where you plan on using it and ask yourself if you still like AT&T as your 3G data provider. Also ask yourself if you shouldn’t tether your iPhone instead of getting an iPad with 3G on board. And that’s how you will save $130 on the spot, not to mention the additional monthly fees you’d end up saving. As a matter of fact, with all the money you’d save you could go for a netbook too!

New 3D Dimension uPrint Plus Printer Now Faster, Bigger & More Efficient [New Stratasys uPrint 3D Printer Still Costs $20,000]

Printers & Scanners

Maybe we’re not witnessing the best economy to go ahead and purchase a 3D printer. But if you have a lot of cash to spare then this uPrint Plus 3D printer might be exactly what you were looking for.

Stratasys Dimension uPrint Plus 3D printer will let you print whatever you want in 3D. Well maybe not whatever but you’ll definitely be able to let your imagination run wild with this one. So whether you’re a professional designer that wants to showcase its concepts or whether you’re printing 3D toys for your children, the uPrint Plus will do the job. But if you’re ready to pay $20,000 for the printer then you surely won’t want to print toys for your kids as you’ll probably have enough dollars left to buy them whatever toy they desire.

The new printer is going to be ready to ship at some point in March. Should you replace the former Dimension uPrint? Well, the 3D printer is bigger, faster and more efficient. What could you want more, besides the $20,000 of course?

The printer has a small footprint which permits desktop use: 25 x 26-inches and it has a build envelope of 8 x 8 x 6 inches which makes it 33% bigger than its predecessor. And you’ll be able to make even larger 3D models right now.

Using the Smart Supports material usage is dropped by 40% so you won’t consume the same amount of material as you did before. Furthermore, the 3D modeling is 69% faster thanks to the SR-30, a support soluble material that will increase the speed of the modeling process.

The uPrint Plus printer will come with various color materials for you to use in order to differentiate various parts of the 3D model. These colors include red, blue, olive, black, dark gray, nectarine, fluorescent yellow, and ivory so go ahead, get those $20,000 and start designing. March is almost here!
