Whist we’ve seen a drum machine application designed specifically for Apple’s iPhone, and even a particularly cool iPhone virtual Lego simulator, this rotary, analogue style dialler iDial application for the iPhone just about pips the aforementioned applications to the post in terms of overtly (retro inspired) coolness - though the virtual Lego application is undoubtedly a strong contender.

Aliph have announced that their highly popular, award winning ‘designer’ Jawbone Bluetooth Headset (see link for video) has been updated resulting in the device being around half the size of the original Jawbone, though the changes are far from just aesthetic.

Invariably there will be those that will argue that, in ‘merely’ being a concept, this touchscreen universal remote conceived of by David Chacon has the luxury of being as desirable as it pleases in being wholly fictitious and constrained only by the designer’s scope of imagination, but to do so would negate the fact that it’s the concepts of today lead to the products of tomorrow and so are as valid a focus of our attention as any product that has successfully made the truncated path through from concept to commercially available product.

HTC has at last taken the wraps of its much anticipated new flagship handset, the Touch Diamond smartphone, which, apart sporting deliciously sleek, glossy aesthetics, comes with HTC’s revised touchscreen TouchFlo 3D animated interface and which, according to Peter Chou, president and CEO of HTC, serves to ‘mark a new era in mobile phone evolution, an era where beauty and size integrate with uncompromising innovation at broadband speeds’.

Whilst cell phone wrist watches are by no means anything new, few – if any –boast quite the degree of highly distinctive and deliciously glorious retro space age styling as this U200i UFO watch which not only serves as a touch screen time piece and a cell phone, but also has a camera and integrated digital media player functionality thrown in for good measure.

It’s been a while since we featured any form of lighting here on TFTS but the moment we came across this fascinating concept from Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken, known simply as ‘Daylight Comes Sideways’, which uses a series of dimmable LEDs to not only create false daylight (an artificial window if you will) but that also ads artificial shadows allowing for animated details, such as a cloud passing by or a tree swaying in the wind, we just knew we had to feature it here.

BenQ have launched their latest cell phone, the C36 Music Phone (successor to BenQ’s C30 handset) which, according to BenQ, offers ‘enhanced multimedia functionalities’ as well as an upgraded 1.3 megapixel camera – which can also serve as a webcam - and a ‘specious’ 2” 176 x 220 resolution 262K colour LCD display.

Samsung’s SGH-P960 TV cell phone is due to hit Europe next month and, apart from serving as a traditional slider type cell phone (see specifications below) its most notable feature is its ability to offer TV on the go courtesy of its DVB-H TV broadcast receiver and support of European DVB-CBMS and OMA-BCAST mobile TV standards – making it the first slider type cell phone to offer mobile TV in Europe.
