Armatix Handgun Comes With High Tech Safety Measures [The Armatix Smartgun Can Only Be Fired By A Single User]

Munich, Germany-based Armatix GmbH has developed new technology to make our firearms safer and prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. The Armatix Smartgun uses a biometric radio wristwatch that acts as a safety, preventing the gun from firing unless it is in the hands of its approved user.

The Armatix Smartgun includes both the pistol and the wristwatch, the latter of which is personalized to the user and accessible via a fingerprint. Touch the watch’s screen with the authorized fingerprint, the watch will then unlock the gun which can fire only when in direct proximity to the watch. The rear butt of the gun includes an LED light, showing green with the gun is armed and ready to fire, and red when the gun is locked and unauthorized for use.

Naturally, this technology could help to prevent the illegal trade of stolen guns. While the Armatix Smartgun could likely be hacked, these biometric security measures will give criminals a hard time in attempting to re-sell a stolen firearm. Additionally, these safety measures will prevent the misuse of guns at home, where pistols and other firearms may be used by children without the approval of their parents.

The .22 caliber Armatix Smartgun will begin shipping next month for roughly $10,000. Here’s to hoping this smart blend of technology can help save a few lives and begin to blunt the efforts of illegal gun traders.

Tablets have really taken off in the health care industry, and the only place they were ever successful before manufacturers started putting Android on them and selling them as big MIDs. Designer Geoffrey Cooper has designed an incredible looking concept device for Toshiba that would be ideal for the health care industry.

The Toshiba Rx Medical Tablet, would feature an all-white body and a huge multi-touch screen. The body would be “wipe-clean” safe, in case some… bodily fluids were spilled on the device, it could be easily cleaned up. It would feature a carrying handle on the back so nurses and doctors could easily lug it around their offices.

The docking stations which would feature a full QWERTY keyboard would replace desktop computers around the hospital as doctors and nurses would just plug their trusty tablet companion into the docking stations and use them in place of the desktops. No word on if Toshiba is actively working on this concept, or if it will ever come out.

The traditional “tablet PC” that are running full versions of Windows have largely been unpopular and sold poorly in the consumer space, but they have done well in the health care enterprise field. This, of course, has been compounded by the big push in the United States for all health care institutions to digitize and standardize all medical records in the country.

At any rate, the Toshiba Rx Medical Tablet is likely just a concept at this point, and may never come out.

You’d say that this paper map that I’m about to show you isn’t exactly a piece of technology that you’d want to employ when traveling to places you have never been before. And you wouldn’t be that wrong either. But there is some tech involved into making a paper map that’s capable to zoom in and out whenever you need it, isn’t there?

Sure you can always use your GPS-enabled phone and a navigation software to get you where you’re going. But if you’re travelling for fun and you’re simply admiring the new town you’re in then you’ll find a paper map far more convenient. It has no mobile OS, no touchscreen to annoy when not pressing the right virtual buttons and no GPS waiting to give you directions.

The Map2 concept is a simple paper map that needs your sense of orientation and your two good eyes to work. And it’s not just a simple map. It’s the kind of paper map that anyone of us would have wanted at some point in our lives where cell phones were only able to make calls and send messages.

So you’ve got your Map2 in your hands, you know your current position but you’d want a closer look. How do you zoom? Well simply unfold the section of your map you’re interested in. The Map2 has four quadrants that can be unfolded and folded to reveal a more detailed map of your area or to hide when you’re done.

Thus you won’t have to deal with your smartphone anymore since you are on vacation. No GPS, no incoming messages, just you, the Map2 and a new city to explore. And if you don’t own a smartphone yet, then that’s an extra reason to use the Map2 instead.

Currently the Map2 is available in London so if you’re visiting the city you could get one for just around $13.

Every now and then we find some curious concepts that are only possible thanks to our up to date technology. Sure the Pyramids, and many other impressive buildings have been raised in a time in which technology and gadgets were not as advanced as today, or so we’d like to think. But the Boston Arcology building in the picture above will only be made possible by our modern skills.

The Boston Arcology building could be considered a town of itself. It has a very interesting shape and, although it doesn’t really fit with the Boston skyline, the box-shaped building might just be something that we’re going to see in the near future.

The Boa is going to offer lots of attractions. Besides housing 15,000 people in one place it will also hide inside various hotels, offices, shops and museums. The entire building will rely on state of the art technology but it also try to be as eco-friendly as possible. Wind turbines, fresh water recovery and storage systems, passive glazing system, sky garden heating/cooling vents, gray water treatment, solar array banding panels, and harbor based water turbines are all going to be used to make the whole ecosystem work.

Not only does it look spectacular and will it employ some daring technology, but the Boa is also going to be a “floating city within a city.” The foundation of the giant building should be made by a series of poured concrete cells which get combined in order to form a buoyant platform. Concrete and steel are going to be used to build such a superstructure which could float despite its impressive dimensions.

The building should in theory be accomplished in about ten years and just in case powerful people decide to go through with the project, we’ll be lurking in the shadows to tell you all about it.

Cyber Technology’s CyberQuad UAV is an entirely new style of unmanned aerial vehicle– and unless you’re piloting it, it’s a rather scary little device. The Cyber Technology CyberQuad is a Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with an on-board camera that can execute nearly silent operation when hovering above its target.

The CyberQuad UAV is powered by four electric propellers that carry its on-board camera and battery pack. The camera sends a video feed back to its pilot who controls the CyberQuad with an RC transmitter and video goggles. While the CyberQuad is primarily a reconnaissance device, it can also carry a payload of up to 3.3 pounds.

Now for the fun stuff– the Cyber Technology CyberQuad can fly at speeds of up to 43 miles per hour or hover on a dime. At 100 feet in the air, the CyberQuad is inaudible, providing stealth operation for your sneaky spy maneuvers. If you’re a handy pilot, you can take-off and land on flat, secure areas and continue to operate the camera, giving its battery a nice little life extension. In constant operation, the CyberQuad UAV can run for 40 minutes per charge on a range of one kilometer.

Pricing and availability for the Cyber Technology CyberQuad UAV has not yet been published.

Have you been good or bad this year? Either way Santa Claus is going to pay you a visit in just a few days. No matter if he’s bringing you a brand new toy to play with or a few pieces of coal, he still needs a powerful sleigh to carry all the gifts for all those kids of all ages on our overcrowded planet.

It looks like GE Global Research has decided to come up with a new sleigh for Santa and the machine they have designed is going to blow your mind. As you can already see from the picture the reindeer are gone for a while and the sleigh itself looks pretty compact. Which makes me wonder as to where will Santa deposit all those gifts. Oh, and don’t worry, Santa will still rely on the reindeer to drive the sleigh.

GE’s Santa sleigh concept features 10 Global Research technologies that “could improve Santa’s experience.” So let’s take a look at each of them:

Icephobic Coatings – sprayed on the exterior will prevent ice buildup while travelling through new fallen snow
Self-powered OLED lighting – these OLEDs do not require a power outlet thus Santa will have the best lighting conditions available
Ceramic Matrix Composites – the sleigh blades are made of super durable CMC
Carbon Fiber Composites – the sleigh will be easier to pull for the reindeer as it is made from a material lighter than metal but just as strong
GE Sodium Batteries – the batteries will help Santa power the sleigh when the reindeers go on coffee breaks
GE Trip Optimizer – cruise control is definitely something Santa needs in order to travel around the globe as efficiently as possible
Wearable RFID Sensor – the sensor can check the freshness of the milk and the cookies in order for Santa not to get a bug while travelling around the world
500GB Holographic Disc – what else should Santa use for storing all those Christmas wishes?
Wireless Medical Sensor – the sensor monitors Santa’s heartbeats. Better have one on board although Santa will never be in any danger.

Vision Location Systems has released the Pikavu Express Locator GPS Tracker for parents who want to use GPS technology to keep an eye on their children. The Pikavu GPS tracker system includes a GPS watch for kids and a portable receiver for parents, providing a street-level view of where your children are at all times.

While the Pikavu GPS tracking system may seem a bit too “big brother” for some, it provides a sense of safety to parents whose kids tend to stray beyond the beaten path. The Pikavu Express Locator is simply the GPS-version of the classic child leash, with all the same stigma but a lot more functionality.

The Pikavu’s GPS watch is water and impact resistant, has a child (and stranger) lock to prevent its removal and packs a battery life of up to 4.5 days. The receiver of the Pikavu system features a 4.2″ touch screen with either an overhead display on a map or a directional arrow if you’re off-the-grid.

The Pikavu Express Locator is available for purchase now on the Pikavu website (http://www.pikavu.com) and sells for roughly $1,440 after conversion (priced at 990 euros).

A team from Japan’s Nagoya Institute of Technology has created a custom-built 158-lens camera, which was quickly awarded the ‘Camera With The Most Lenses’ Record by the good people at Guinness World Records. The camera was used for their studies into fire, and can also double as a 3D camera.

This isn’t an obscure $10,000 digital camera from a boutique South Korean company – it actually has a real scientific purpose and was custom-built. Professor Yojiro Ishino and his group of students built the camera to capture a burning flam from as many degrees as possible. The camera took six-months to complete. The main body of the device is roughly 7.2cm (2.8 inches) high and 47cm (18 inches) in diameter.

The camera can also generator a 3D picture of the flame by using CT (computed tomography) technology. You’d expect something like this to be expensive, but the press is reporting that the device only cost the team roughly $332 to construct it. It’s a cool gadget, but don’t expect it to be hitting the shelves of your local Best Buy anytime soon.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when regular batteries would simply not suffice. That’s when such algae-based batteries should be employed, but are we ready for this brand new technology?

We’re stuck using AA batteries that don’t really measure up to our expectations, not to mention our disappointment when it comes to cell phone and laptop batteries. So would a battery made of green algae be good enough? Well at least the environment won’t suffer as much when we dispose of batteries made of grass that grows underwater, will it?

Scientists have found that the regular green algae, called Cladophora, also known for that algae smell we have to deal on certain beaches, makes a special kind of cellulose. What’s particularly amazing is the large cellulose surface area, about 100 times of the cellulose found in paper. Researchers were able to play with the conducting polymer and make it recharge, hold and discharge electricity.

Maria Stromme, nanotechnologist at the Uppsala University in Sweden had this to say about the algae-based battery:

We have long hoped to find some sort of constructive use for the material from algae blooms and have now been shown this to be. This creates new possibilities for large-scale production of environmentally friendly, cost-effective, lightweight energy storage systems.

That doesn’t mean that our future handsets and notebooks will come with cellulose-based batteries made of green algae. In fact, the researchers behind this technology are looking for new ways of using it like clothes and wallpaper, although nothing is really certain at this point.

And although they don’t want to replace the lithium battery just yet, it looks like the algae battery would hold 50 to 200% more charge than similar conducting polymer batteries. They would recharge a lot faster compared to standard rechargeable batteries. Instead of an hour they would be done in 11 seconds to 8 minutes. The algae battery only showed a 6% loss of charge after 100 charging cycles while similar polymer batteries show a 50% loss after 60 charging cycles.

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t mind seeing those algae batteries power up my laptop right now. How much would one such battery cost?

Lockheed Martin’s DisOPS PDA System For US Military [Lockheed Martin Developing PDA-Laptop System for US Soldiers]

Lockheed Martin, the people that brought you such things as the F-16 Falcon and the Trident missile are now bringing the the US military a new device or more of an integrated system. From Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Lab comes the Distributed Operations (DisOPS) info tech system, which consists of laptops and PDAs being carried by different soldiers in different roles.

The first part of the DisOPS system is the ‘ruggedized’ (Lockheed Martin’s words) laptop that a squad command would carrying. Featuring a touch screen, the squad leader can draw on a map with a stylus, placing icons on an map, making a mission plan. The second part, would be the PDA (also ruggedized) which would sync up with the laptop via satellite, cellular connections, or even WiFi. Geographical information from the squad leader’s map and his annotations on the map would be displayed on the PDA, which would include a GPS unit for exact positioning.

The PDA would provide the locations of other friendly forces, and a digital camera, with the ability to upload pictures back to the squad leader or ‘off-site’. Soldiers carrying the PDA would also to make annotations and send them back to the squad leader. One of the more mysterious features include a ’sniper detection’ feature that is able to detect a sniper’s location, by analyzing and triangulating the sound of the gunshot from multiple PDAs (similar gunshot location systems have been put into use by some police departments in the United States).

No word on the cost, or availability or even if it will come out, but the bigger question is – will it run on Android?

Remember that awesome ‘power loader’ from the film Aliens where Sigourney Weaver is able to lift gigantic cargo crates? Well, unfortunately, Honda didn’t reveal the Power Loader 2000, but Tokyo’s University of Science unveiled what could be a step in that direction. The ‘robotic muscle suit’ allows users to lift an extra 20 kilograms (44 pounds).

The robotic suit has been around for a while from the University of Science, but the version demonstrated yesterday at Tokyo’s International Robot Exhibition, was slimmer than models previously shown. The version shown yesterday was their first working prototype, and demonstrations yesterday were the first publicly.

PC World reports that a student volunteer was asked to carry as many 10 kg bags of rice as he could with and without the suit. He was able to carry three without the suit, and two more when the suit was activated. When the suit was powered off, he quickly dropped the five bags of rice because the weight was too much for him.

So, while we won’t be lifting two-ton crates around the space station anytime soon, this science fiction tech is slowly becoming a reality. The University plans to have a production ready model in 2010. PC World reports that earlier this year, Toyota begun experimenting with similar technology in their car factories where workers have to lift heavy car parts. Last year, we reported that another Japanese company was renting robotic legs to customers.

Remember all that nonsense that terrorists could build a cruise missile with a Playstation 2? Well, that was bunk, but, the real life United States Air Force has an interest in PlayStation 3s, and it’s not for gaming. The air-division of the US military wants the Sony gaming consoles for it’s cell processor, as it hopes to build a supercomputing cluster for research purposes.

The USAF already owns 336 PS3, clustered together for supercomputer research, but after their research program was awarded $2 million by the US Department of Defense, they placed an order for another 2,200, to add to their cluster of super computers. This isn’t as far fetched as it might sound, as the Cell processor featured inside the PS3 is the same featured inside the IBM Roadrunner, the world’s second fastest super computer. (Albeit, the PS3 features eight Cell processors, the Roadrunner features just a bit more at over 12,000). The Cell processor came about after a joint-venture between Sony, IBM and Toshiba.

Blog Sony Insider reports that the Air Force’s choice is more cost effective, as a comparable custom-built supercomputer solution could of cost the Air Force 13 times and considerable more engineering time than their solution of buying over 2,000 PlayStation 3s (and the supercomputers probably don’t play Blu-Ray movies, either). The Air Force specifically named the Intel Xeon-based supercomputers as being too slow and too expensive for their needs.

The needs of the cluster will primarily be research, but possible future Air Force applications include video processing, radar enhancement and investigations into ‘neuromorphic’ (or human thought-like) computing. Another goal of the PlayStation 3’s cluster research is to see if the Cell processor can be used in other military applications.

Imagine you’re playing your favorite level from Call of Duty, shooting terrorists and saving the day, when suddenly, you get an alert about an incoming tornado. Except this tornado isn’t in the game, it’s right outside your window. The State of New York is planning to send ‘emergency messages’ to New York games through Xbox Live, and eventually, other systems as well.

The New York Emergency Management Office is now planning a system that would let them issue alerts to games over the Xbox Live network, and later on, other gaming systems. The alerts would include things like severe storm warnings and that sort of thing.

Rico Singleton, the Chief Information Officer of New York, said the goal of the plan is to reach the 25 and younger crowd that are spending more time on video games than TV and radio. Information Week reported that little details are out about the system yet, and Singleton reported that right now they’re in the testing phase.

The State of New York recently launched an state-wide program called ‘Empire 2.0′ that has uses various technological advancements. Some of them include State Senators using a Wiki to markup proposed bills, state employees using Linked In and the state’s Department of Mental Health monitoring Facebook for suicide warning signs. Emergency responders are even being trained by the state in the virtual world Second Life. Right, because if you can give CPR and put out fires in Second Life you’re completly ready to do it in real life.

This the second story in a short time involving governments using Xbox Live to their advantage. A few days ago, we reported that British Intelligence was trying to recruit employees through Microsoft’s gaming service.

If you’ve ever wanted to venture into space but have nerves of steel you may be interested in an ad that’s appeared on Craigslist seeking ‘someone unique’ who’s interested in taking a trip to Titan for a cool $25,000 – but there’s slight a catch (isn’t there always).

Sorry I said a ‘slight catch’. In actuality the catch is anything but slight as not only will you need to be ‘someone unique’, be not afraid of heights and extreme contidions as well as coming in at no taller than 5′10 you’ll also need to be suicidal as, and there’s no subtle way to put this, you won’t be coming back. Why? Because whilst the placer of the ad is ‘certain you will make it safely to Titan’ this is very much a one way trip thanks to there not being sufficient fuel to get you back home – which brings a certain, overwhelming finality to the trip.

The biggest drawback (you thought such a product would be flawless, eh?) of the new Withings Wi-Fi enabled bathroom scale is that it’s available in the US already for something close to $160.

We have a question though! What if there’s no hotspot around when you check on your body weight, will it remember it and upgrade the chart whenever the Internet is back? If so, we’re really busted in here!

As you relax and concentrate, the headband sends a wireless signal whose strength is based on your level of mental concentration that controls the speed of the game’s air fan. You are supposed to be able to increase or decrease its speed, suspending or lowering the foam ball as you make your way around the course. Apparently, our brains are one-trick ponies, capable of only one foam ball function at a time. To this end, the unit features a knob so you can rotate the gameboard to move the ball through one of eight, interchangeable obstacles.

The Mind Flex Telekinetic Obstacle Course is available for $99.95 at www.hammacher.com and requires 4-C and 3-AAA batteries that aren’t included (ouch). The units aren’t expected to start shipping until September 25 so you have plenty of time to whip your gray matter into shape.

The Japanese love their vending machines. Their country has taken the automatic dispensing of everything from electronics to underwear to a level not seen in most other countries and when you couple this with their almost unnatural love for electronics, you get Hitachi’s latest invention, the Biometric Vending Machine.

Hitachi seems to have made a giant (and creepy) leap forward in the realm of vending machine technology. It has combined its proprietary biometric authentication system, which is based on the recognition of finger vein patterns in your hand, with a pretty normal-looking vending machine, to come up with a device that makes it possible for registered users to buy beverages without swiping a card or inserting a single Yen.

Basically, users sign up with the program and it captures an image of the unique vein patterns in their hand so that next time they insert their digits into the machine it automatically charges the credit card they have stored on file with the company. The company also incorporated a digital signage system so that buyers will get to see personalized ads or other information on an LCD screen.

Hitachi has not released information about whether or not the biometrics vending machine will actually see mass production, but they have decided to install several of the machines throughout their office buildings in Japan. I don’t know about you, but having my veins scanned every time I want a can of Coke is just a tad bit on the violating side.

There are certain things that will always creep me out – carnies and public restrooms among them – but I have to admit that robotic animals of any kind might be near the top of the list. I’m not sure if it’s the lifeless, piercing eyes or the rigid mechanical movements that do it. Maybe it’s just the fact that no matter how much technology you cram under the fake fur they just never seem natural. Either way, when I saw the latest creature creation from Sega Toys, the Dream Cat Venus, it sent chills up and down my spine.

The Dream Cat Venus is actually the second incarnation of a robotic cat for the Japanese firm. I guess they just hadn’t scared enough children with their first pass, the Yume Neko Smile. Complete with mottled faux fur, this replica of a Norwegian Forest Cat is supposed to be the next best thing to Fluffy. Sega actually worked with the Tohoku University’s Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer in Northern Japan during the development phase to make sure they got it just right. I suppose I can see the connection between curing cancer and robo-kitties.

The Dream Cat Venus is programmed to respond to its human counterpart in various ways depending upon the applied stimulus. Now doesn’t that sound all warm and fuzzy? Apparently, if you use a phrase like “there, there” the Venus will provide a simulated purr to show its appreciation. I wonder if it’ll short circuit around catnip?

The Dream Cat Venus also has several pre-programmed movements including laying down, paw movements and several reactions to touch. They are triggered from a number of hidden sensors and photoreceptors placed on the cats body. The battery powered pussy measures 490×240x230-mm (19.3×9.4×9.1-in) and comes with a plastic comb for grooming. Available only in Japan you can pick up the Yume Neko Dream Cat Venus on July 30^th for around $110 equivalent. Hairballs sold separately.

We’ve all seen the little gadgets that you can carry around that let you know when you’re near a Wi-Fi signal. They normally take the form of a small handheld device that you can fit in your pocket or put on your keychain. Not a bad idea, really. So why don’t we see too many wearable gizmos that do the same thing? Probably because they don’t seem to make much sense and most people wouldn’t be caught dead wearing them. The makers of the WiFi Cap certainly got it right when they called their latest invention “geeky” and I’m sure they won’t be winning any fashion awards anytime soon.

Marketed by ThumbsUp, the WiFi Cap is basically a ballcap that doubles as a signal-detecting device. It let’s you know that you are in the wireless zone by lighting up a little display on the front of the cap. There are several other reviews of this technology floating around out there and I have to say that they are spot on when they point out the seemingly obvious flaw of this new design. How are you supposed to see the signal if you are wearing the cap? I guess if you have a friend with you (who shouldn’t have let you put on the damn thing to begin with) they can let you know when your head starts to blink.

For you and me, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is probably a magical car in a children’s book that Ian Fleming (James Bond creator) wrote almost half a century before or just a funny name, but for designer Adam Palethorpe it’s an eco-friendly city vehicle concept. Keeping away from the aero-engined racing cars from the past (that inspired the story), the new Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a futuristic city commuter meant for the green-minded.

The two-seater vehicle runs on an electric motors, only packs the bare-essentials and features a bunch of eco factors including solar cells on the roof, a regenerative braking system and options for harnessing wind power. A viable solution that would produce fewer toxic emisssions, the new Chitty Chitty Bang Bang city commuter seems to be fun to drive and easy to park.

The only thing we’re concerned about is how aerodynamic is the whole setup.

Definitely aimed for the young, we wouldn’t mind taking it for a spin to the grocery store – it certainly has space for a couple of six packs.

Probably the king of casemodding, Ben Heck’s (or Benjamin J Heckendorn) latest incarnation of a portable Xbox is this amazing revision 5 laptop of his portable Xbox 360 console. Based on a Gateway 1775W laptop, this one bad mofo portable system is based on a Jasper motherboard, features a built-in Ethernet port, digital push button volume controls, and a flush mounted optical drive.

Other than these, the super-sized Xbox 360 laptop uses a 17-inch widescreen LCD monitor (running at 720p resolution), packs WiFi, USB ports, and memory card slots. But for such a cute (Andrew will hate the word for sure) monster to breath, there’s a better bracket to hold the fans v for improved ventilation.

He sure did a great job cramming such a beefy system into a portable case that will get all your friends “wow”. Too bad this one is already spoken for … No?

If you are anything like me, and I know you are, you spend too much time fending off photogs hoping to get a glimpse of your famous face. OK, so maybe that’s just wishful thinking, but a guy can dream, right? The bottom-line, it seems like most celebs want to be famous and private at the same time, but those pesky paparazzi have ideas of their own. Talk about your conflicts of interest. What’s a star to do if they simply don’t want their 2am face flashed across the front page? Designer Adam Harvey has created a handbag that just might prove to be Kodak kryptonite.

I’m not really sure who this Harvey guy is, but he sure seems to be getting a lot of press lately. The tech blogs are abuzz about his anti-paparazzi bag and all of this exposure might have him in need of his own invention in no time. The technology is pretty simple. A light-sensing photovoltaic cell sewn into the bag is set to trigger at any sudden bright light. Basically, if it sees a flash it flashes back. The result is an obscuring burst of super-luminosity sure to blind even the most ardent star stalkers. I don’t know how it will perform during the day, but it is said to have settings that make it ideal for reaction to the slower shutter speeds used at night.

I know that the idea of making a celebrity’s life easier is pretty low on most of our priority lists. After all, it goes with the territory, right? But there is also a line between press coverage and down right invasion of privacy. Adam Harvey might soon become the celebrity poster child for the rights of the super-famous with his anti-paparazzi bag. Then again, it might just be a flash in the pan. There are rumors that the anti-flash technology might find its way into ties and smaller wearables in the near future. No price has been set (that we know of) but it’s my guess that if you are in a position to need it, you can afford it.

It also claims that you …”can make a full fireworks show, complete with sounds, that is never rained out and can be shown year round.” I know I always get a craving for fireworks around February, so this would be perfect.

Monagas found that by analyzing differences in pitch, frequency of crying spells and changes in volume, he was able to determine that they fell into one of five distinct mood categories: hungry, bored, annoyed, sleepy or stressed. I have to give the guy credit. Three years and a hundred crying babies? I can’t even make it through a 45-minute flight with one screaming infant.

Does the thing work? I haven’t the faintest idea. The claim is that after 20 seconds, it will analyze the crying sounds and display one of five graphics depicting the appropriate mood of your baby. It’s a baby mood box. I can also imagine that there are more than a few guys out there wondering if this would work on their woman. It’s about the size of a small alarm clock and it even has a digital display of the temperature and humidity in your baby’s room. I’m pretty sure those last two features are there to prevent hot-moist baby syndrome. If you are having trouble with excess popularity, good looks, and general coolness, and the pocket protector isn’t doing it for you, I think I have just the thing. I believe I may have stumbled upon the quintessential geek garment. This thing enables you to accomplish two things. You can harness the power of the sun to charge electronics and look like a complete idiot at the same time.

I wasn’t able to track down the source of this brilliant combination of haut couture and eco-friendly charging, but I think it’s safe to say that it was born in the land of the Great Wall. The CVFR-S09 Solar Vest combines the hideously bad look of a tan fisherman’s vest with the equally bad look of four solar panels strewn across the back. I can’t be sure what really sets this one apart from the rest. Maybe it’s the fact that anyone wearing it is almost guaranteed to remain alone. Maybe it’s the words “Solar Vest” embroidered across the back. Either way, I’m pretty sure that even Napoleon Dynamite would be embarrassed to wear this thing. This pic says it all -

This vest is equipped with four solar panels that can be used to charge your gadgets. The panels are even removable so that you can set them in the window to recharge while you’re inside. That makes it all OK, doesn’t it? The fact that someone can hold up to eight gadgets in their vest and recharge each of them – one at a time – is somehow both sad and weird. I have always wished that I could have a small, multi-colored, visor-wearing autonomous robot penguin that would meander around my desk making noises and lighting up. Am I alone here? OK, this one almost defies description and it definitely defies usefulness. Let’s put this one in the WTF file. Introducing the mydeskfriend project from Arimaz.

I am not sure what kind of company makes this type of product, but I do know that one of them is named Arimaz. Their website states that they develop and market communicating mobile robots. After researching this particular gadget, I have come to the conclusion that Arimaz develops and markets scary little interactive noisemakers for those that have given up on developing any kind of relationship with other humans. The mydeskfriend project (sounds weird on its own) has produced a product that is sure to raise more than just my eyebrows.

The tiny robo-penguin is capable of roaming around on your desk while you are working, making loud, obnoxious noises, and reacting to various pre-programmed changes in its mood with color-changing eyes. The product website shares that it has five different moods and reacts to “…voice, poking, cherishing, shaking, and more…” I hesitate to ask what the “and more” would be in this case.

If that wasn’t enough to convince you to buy one, it also has been programmed to interact with your FaceBook account. Heart be still. Apparently, the co-dependent little bugger “needs” things like food and medication, which you and your fellow anthropophobic friends can provide via the social networking site’s applications.

I have written way more than I ever thought I could about this gizmo. The Arimaz website doesn’t exactly win any awards for usability so you might need to Google a bit for more info. The rumor is that it will be available worldwide sometime in September for a cost of about $100/61GBP. Charging dock is included. Sanity is not.

Imagine that you’re in Lausanne, you had a few beers and the intoxicating fluid is trying to get out of your body. You really need to go, but the only public toilet you find has transparent walls. What a crappy idea, right? Wrong. Apparently the Swiss came up with a high-tech solution that will turn the “palace” walls (partly made of liquid crystal) opaque by a simple push of a button. They go under electric tension, darken and hence ensure the privacy you need.

However, there’s a small problem with it. Inside there’s a motion sensor that will turn everything to “visible” again if there?s no movement during a certain amount of time. Does that mean that one has to be fast even if you had a dangerous mix of pasta and a large bowl of? fish and chips? But you can always wave your hands, right?

Joke aside, the transparent public toilet is an innovative (highly expensive) idea that will force people to be more careful with what they leave behind. Don’t you think?

Electronic Sports has launched Dogfight – a next generation exergaming fitness product. Basically, a flight simulator and an exercise bike cobbled together. You pedal, the plane flies! Spring-loaded handles are provided for controlling the aircraft.

Talk about making exercise fun, if this doesn’t get the couch potatoes to hit the exercise bikes then nothing will. As an incentive to burn fat on the exercise machine, you get to enjoy virtual flight across several landscapes such as blazing deserts, through severe snows, and also a tropical archipelago.

You can move to the Dogfight phase only after having mastered the basics of flight. Hopefully this will mean that you have to sweat it out for a while on the machine. Once you are done with the basics, you can pit your skills against others in the gym or against online foes. You can play competitively in two modes – “Fly Solo” and “Dogfight”. I think this contraption could also help us improve our hand-eye-feet co-ordination. You can maintain scores and your win / loss record at Electronic Sports website, meet other enthusiasts, learn new tricks, and find out to what extent people have managed to reduce the inches from their waists.

Mamoru – Spooky Looking Robot to Assist Elders

Looking at the image you might wonder if this is a good time to be a senior citizen in Japan. But worry not, for inspite of its downright spooky looks The Mamoru (which means “to protect” in Japanese) is a benign robot that guides forgetful elderly people to their glasses, slippers, medicine, etc.

The Mamoru has been designed by the University of Tokyo, I don’t know why they chose to keep the poor robot almost limbless, the two appendages hanging from its sides are poor apologies for hands. In any case the robot is incapable of locomotion or making use of those hands. The eyes of The Mamoru are actually wide angle camera lenses fitted with image recognition software. Once you have registered objects with the Mamoru it will monitor their locations and inform you upon asking. It can also be programmed to tell you when it is time for medicine.

The Mamoru project is a prestigious one with noted Japanese firms such as Toyota Motors and Fujitsu helping out with it. However, commercial production is still a decade away. Maybe when the first commercial Mamoru rolls down the assembly line, it will be capable of far more than being the “memory” of senior citizens.

We weren’t sure how to title this particular item as, whichever way we put it – within a half-reasonable word count – it simply refused to make any cohesive sense. But then just how does one introduce a home automation computer controller that can control everything from doors to security cameras to jacuzzis (and a great deal more besides) which comes with a mirror through which a (butt ugly) face – the face of the virtual ‘English’ butler – appears to let you know what’s happening and to do your bidding? It’s not easy, let me tell you.

Billed as being ‘compatible with nearly all existing home automation and security systems’, meaning that it is compatible with the ones its compatible with and isn’t with the ones its not compatible with (which is extremely enlightening), the linked product page describes the Virtual Butler thus (and, no, a quick check of the calendar will confirm today isn’t April 1st):

The Virtual Butler is an amazingly intelligent computer server that connects to most of your home’s electronics–security cameras, front gate, garage doors, back doors, pool gate, jacuzzi, etc–and alerts you whenever there is a change in your environment (arriving guest, departing car, opened pool gate, etc).

The Virtual Butler appears through its specially designed mirror and speaks to you through your home’s speakers (it disappears afterwards). It literally shows you what the occurrence is through a live video feed, which works if you have security cameras in your home. It also reminds you of appointments and that the jacuzzi is ready. The Virtual Butler speaks in an English accent and looks the part, but a customized butler can be created for you that looks and sounds like anything you want.

I must admit, initially I had to check whether I’d overdone today’s medication but, no, this is all legit, to the tune of $20,000, though we should stress its probably not a good idea if you have young kids in the house – the ghostly vision of a face appearing in the mirror, its voice bellowing out, is enough to sow the seeds of severe psychological problems they may never truly get over.

We always think of aerial photographs and helicopters in the same sentence but now thanks to Skyros, you can take amazing bird’s eye view pictures while remaining safely on the ground.

Interesting concept you might agree! This fascinating device, known as the Skyros, designed by Siddharth Kambe & Dipti Hanako Kambe, provides a refreshing view on modern day concepts regarding cameras. If you consider that not too long ago (in historical terms at least) the human race marveled at the daguerreotype (1839) and just over 170 years later we’re talking about launching cameras and taking digital photos at bird’s eye view (without leaving the earth’s crust!) It is simply amazing how far we have progressed in such little time.

The Skyros concept revolves around the simple scientific art of pneumatic pressure. The Skyros aerial camera is launched approximately 120 feet into the air, from the ground, and eventually retains stability through use of its rotors. As the Skyros floats back to earth, it takes a series of images, at various intervals, from the high angle position.

Luckily the designers, of the Skyros, have ensured that this concept has an in-built sensor which will ensure that the camera flies back to the user without the user having to worry about running after it like a mad man!

Once the Skyros has safely returned to you, then you can attach it to its base where you will be able to view the pictures it has just taken.

Fairly simple if you ask me!

The Skyros aerial camera is also said to be multi-functional and can be used as a normal every-day camera, meaning it will be useful rather than just a gimmick if it were to ever break free from the conceptual stage.
