Canon EOS 5D May Get New Model Next Week, Say Reports
We all know that next week is when the Mobile World Congress show gets kicked off in earnest, and as such, most of next week’s news will probably be related to mobile gear and assorted hardware. But looking to buck the trend that’s already shaped up before our very eyes is the possibility that the folks out at Canon may be looking to drop a whole new camera that week, a new entrant in the EOS 5D line.

The new model, which is expected to get its announcement Monday or Tuesday of next week, is set to be a step up in Canon’s already formidable DSLR line, packing in a 22 megapixel full-frame image sensor, along with a 3.2 inch LCD display, 100 percent viewfinder coverage, and a 61 point autofocus system. There will likely be more to the spec loadout announced when it actually makes a formal appearance, and some of these previously uncovered figures may change along the way.
Interestingly, we even have pricing for this model, which is expected to retail at a price described as “around” $3500, though the release date is still unclear as yet.

Considering that the last release of an EOS 5D was around three years ago, and considering further that Nikon’s got some plans to bring out some heavy hardware all its own in the form of the D800, it’s a fair bet that Canon’s looking to beef up the line accordingly. And considering what we know so far about the EOS 5D’s newest iteration, I’d say they would likely succeed in giving Nikon a run for its money, considering what all that camera’s looking to pack. They’ll need a pretty high-tension model just to keep users happy and not looking to Nikon to provide the top-notch in DSLR. But the timing of the announcement is what I take issue with; with the 2012 MWC set to hit around the same time, why would Canon put out word about a new camera in the midst of all that news? Seems like a recipe for disaster from here.
But what do you guys think about this one? Think that Canon’s tempting fate by hoping to toss their new DSLR into the mix of MWC news? Or do you figure they’ve got a good idea offering a distraction from mobile tech? No matter what you think, head on down to the comments section below and let’s talk DSLR!
