Sky Go Now Available For Android Smartphones

Sky TV Announces Sky Go For Android, Will Work On Select Android Smartphones & Comes Free Of Charge For Sky TV Customers

If you are living in the UK or Ireland and happen to be a customer of Sky TV, well, it looks like you now have another available option when it comes to watching television. This latest will be available for select Android smartphones and will allow users to watch while out and about.

Well, out and about anywhere they have either a 3G or Wi-Fi connection available. The Sky Go service will be available free of charge for Sky TV customers and they will be able to watch while traveling around the UK or Ireland. The service will allow for watching 22 live channels including the following;

  • Sky Atlantic
  • Sky 1
  • Sky Living
  • Sky Arts 1
  • Sky News
  • All 4 Sky Sports channels plus Sky Sports News and ESPN
  • All 11 Sky Movies channels

And now for the slightly disappointing news — the part about the select handsets. The Sky Go service is available for the following Android devices;

  • HTC Desire
  • HTC Desire S
  • HTC Desire HD
  • HTC Incredible
  • HTC Sensation
  • Samsung Galaxy S
  • Samsung Galaxy S II

In other words, despite there being plenty and plenty of Android devices on the market today — the Sky Go service has more available channels than it does support for smartphones. Needless to say, this appears to be the default way of launching streaming video services on Android. After all, we saw the same with some other big players such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. Additionally, it was noted that if your handset it rooted — it will not work.

“For rights reasons Sky Go is not supported on any Android device that has been rooted.”

Otherwise, those looking to get started can download the Sky Go app from the Android Market and then surf on over to skygo.com/signup with their Sky iD username and password to get everything set up and ready for your account. The Sky Go service will “identify your bandwidth and begin to stabilize” within the first few seconds of streaming and comes with a recommendation of a minimum of 500kb per second for high-quality streaming. And lastly, as some will probably have a data plan with a limited amount of transfer — make sure you pay attention when streaming over a 3G connection.
