iTunes To Get Substantial Retooling In Coming Days

iTunes To Get New Design, First In Almost Three Years, Reports Suggest A Launch In Fall

It’s been a long time since Apple last did anything in the way of design with iTunes, but now some reports are emerging that suggest Apple’s got some plans for iTunes coming, and they’re going to restructure the whole thing.

When I say long time, I’m not kidding; the last time Apple performed any cosmetic modifications to iTunes goes all the way back to 2009, and in that space there have been a whole lot of competitors stepping into the market. The rise of music vendors like Spotify, as well as general purpose media vendors like Amazon (not to mention the variety of digital video services that have stepped into the fray), means that Apple will need to keep the service fresh in order to keep drawing users, and thus, money.

What’s going to show up in this particular version, you wonder? Well, right now, no one’s talking specifics, though two things are currently being bandied around: one, the new iTunes will be more user-friendly and simpler to handle, and two, you’re likely to see this make its debut in fall, as that’s usually when Apple likes to release things related to music. Though admittedly, as we’ve only just seen recently, Apple’s making something of a break with tradition these days, so the chances of seeing this in fall will be less than absolute.

And it’s another smart move Apple’s making, really; considering the sheer amount of competition that Apple’s facing in the digital media vending services, Apple’s really going to have to pull to make sure they’re offering the best possible user experience. And a redesign will go a long way toward helping people find the software, music, and video that they want to use, hear and see respectively, especially when you stop and consider the sheer amount of stuff that’s currently in iTunes. The more Apple can do to make sure you get what you want when you go in, the farther they’ll go in keeping you away from the competition.

But what do you guys think about this one? What should Apple be doing to make the iTunes experience more along the lines of something you’d rather use instead of the various other options you’ve got out there? No matter what you think, head on down to the comments section below and let’s talk iTunes!
