Samsung Unveils New Fancy SD & MicroSD Cards

Samsung's New Memory Cards Look Nice & They're Rugged, But They're A Bit More Expensive Than Normal SD Cards

There are some consumer electronics devices that people get excited about, new phones, new tablets, new laptops, new HDTVs, etc. I’m guessing that very few people ever get excited when companies quietly release new SD cards or microSD cards. But, that may change has Samsung issued a press release announcing a new line of memory cards that actually look kind of stylish. Is this the beginning of a trend of new, flash SD cards for our phones and cameras?

Samsung is offering two new lines of SD and microSD cards, your basic “High Speed Series” and the faster “Plus Extreme Speed Series”.  The High Speed Series features cards ranging in size from 2GB to 32GB. Most of the cards are Class 6 cards, while the 32GB models are Class 10 cards. Pricing is higher than normal, but not too bad, they’re asking $25 for an 8GB card.

The Plus Extreme Speed Series cards are a bit more expensive and are all Class 10 cards, but Samsung is offering them in just 8 and 16GB memory sizes and for a bit more money. The 8GB will set you back $30 while the 16GB card will set you back $35.

But, these cards don’t just look pretty, they’re also durable. Samsung claims their waterproof, shockproof and protected from electromagnetic energy. To test these claims, Samsung says that the cards can withstand 24 hours in water, 3,200 pounds of pressure, and can hang out in MRI machines with a power of 10,00 gauss.

What do you think? Are these cards something special, or just overpriced prettied up junk?
