Apple App Store Closing On Huge Milestone, Offers Prizes

App Downloaders May Be Looking At A Big Prize If They Can Tick Over Apple's Download Odometer

At this point, it’s possibly only a surprise to people who’ve never actually used the internet before that the Apple App Store is an extremely popular service that serves up a huge number of downloads every day. But what you may not know is just how big the App Store is, and that it’s gotten sufficiently big to be about to tick over to a monster milestone. And the person responsible for said ticking over will stand to get a fat prize from the crew out at Apple.

The App Store is about to serve up its 25 billionth download, covering the wide, wide array of apps from free and paid alike in every subclass from games to productivity apps. In fact, though the numbers tick over with alarming rapidity, the last reported download was just shy of 24.3 billion, and as such, that means someone’s about to push Apple’s download count over an impressive new edge.

Thus, Apple’s offering up an equally impressive prize to the first person who downloads that 25 billionth app: a $10,000 gift card to iTunes, which will net you a whole lot of content indeed. Of course, as per US law, you won’t necessarily have to download an app to enter the contest, but considering you can download a free app and still qualify, there’s not a whole lot of incentive here to not only enter the contest but also have a part in ticking over that meter to the magic number.

It’s a number that goes not only to the sheer popularity of the platform, but also to the primacy of it. The Android / iOS debate has been going strong for some time now, and while each platform’s users have long espoused the particular benefits of their system of choice, it’s hard to argue with numbers like the ones that Apple’s putting up.

But what do you guys think about this one? Are the impressive numbers that Apple’s putting up a signal that Apple’s really the top dog in mobile? Or do you think that this is just a sign that they’re giving Android a good fight, though not really a clear win? Anyone out there going to try and land the gift card? No matter what your stance on this one, we always like hearing from you, so hit the comments section and tell us what you think!
