Guild Wars 2 Console Version Confirmed

Guild Wars 2 Console Port Confirmed By NCSoft, Will It Launch Alongside PC Version?

When it comes to reporting video game news, after a while you’re no longer surprised by new announcements. It comes with the territory – you notice trends in the market and come to expect things, like today’s announcement that Assassin’s Creed 3 is a thing, or that most PC ports or poorly optimized. But every so often, you get an announcement that comes out of left field and completely blindsides you.

Example: NCSoft and ArenaNet have announced that Guild Wars 2 is coming to consoles. We rarely see MMOs leave the realm of PC gaming, and if I’m being completely honest, the Guild Wars franchises would be one of the last MMO franchise I’d expect to make the jump.

But according to NCSoft executives during a financial conference call today (as reported by Eurogamer), a console version of Guild Wars 2 is indeed in the preparation stage of development. NCSoft says that ArenaNet is currently pouring most of its resources into the PC version, so don’t expect the console version and the PC version to arrive at the same time. In fact, don’t be surprised if development on the console version doesn’t truly begin until the PC version has been released.

Not enough proof? Feast your eyes on this little tidbit from ArenaNet community team lead Martin Kerstein, which was posted to the guildwars2guru.com forums:

We stated multiple times in public that we have a small team working on a console version, but that we are fully dedicated to make the most kickass game for PC

So there you have it. It seems that Guild Wars 2 will definitely be coming to consoles, and now the topic becomes a matter of “when?” and “which platforms?” Microsoft hasn’t been kind to MMOs in the past, especially not to free-to-play devs, so we can probably count the Xbox 360 out. Anyone up for some Guild Wars 2 action on the PS3 then?

What do you think? Will you buy a console version of Guild Wars 2? Do you think that ArenaNet and NCSoft should keep the franchise exclusive to the PC? Head down to the comments section to let us know, and keep it tuned right to TFTS for more information about this intriguing console port!
