2 Million Skyrim Mods Downloaded Through Steam Workshop In First Week

Skyrim’s Steam Workshop Integration A Success, Bethesda Shares Sales Data From 2011

Last week, Bethesda released the Skyrim Creation Kit, which allows Skyrim fans to create mods of all varieties for the PC version of the game. Mods have always been a big draw of Elder Scrolls games, and according to some new statistics from Bethesda and Valve, mods are just as big a hit with Skyrim.

Since the Creation Kit was released last week, 2,500 Skyrim mods have been released on the Steam Workshop. Of course, some of these mods have already existed on other sites like Skyrim Nexus for months now, but now that the Creation Kit is available, updates for already existing mods have been flying in at what feels like a breakneck pace.

Those 2,500 mods have been downloaded a total of 2 million times as well – a sizeable portion of Skyrim’s player base on Steam. That number is probably far higher than either Bethesda or Valve expected, which gives them even more reason to celebrate.

In other Skyrim news, Bethesda has announced that Skyrim was only bested by Modern Warfare 3 as far as 2011 sales are concerned. This means that Skyrim managed to sell more than any console exclusive, along with high-profile games such as Battlefield 3 and Portal 2. On PC, Skyrim outsold every other game 3:1 during November 2011, and even today it still regularly finds itself at the top of the Steam charts, usually only being beaten out by brand new releases or games that are sale.

That’s definitely great news for both Bethesda and Elder Scrolls fans alike, and all of the support Skyrim has received from gamers is entirely deserved too. What do you think – is Skyrim worthy of this success, or did Skyrim fail to capture your attention? What kind of mods have you downloaded since the Creation Kit released?
