Motorola Medfield Android Ice Cream Sandwich Smartphone Leaked
Yesterday the European Commission in Europe and the Department of Justice in the USA approved Google’s proposed purchase of Motorola, although officials will still keep an eye on the way Motorola and Google will use their FRAND patents in relationship with other players in the mobile space. But we’re not interested in patents right now, as the first image of an upcoming Motorola device that will hit stores later this year has been leaked.

The unnamed Ice Cream Sandwich device is said to sport an Intel Medfield mobile platform and it’s probably going to be the first Motorola/Google – what should we call these devices now that the merger has been approved? – smartphone that will come with Intel hardware inside.
In case you’re not familiar with this strange Google-Motorola-Intel alliance, we’ll remind you that Motorola and Intel announced at CES a few weeks ago a multi-year multi-device partnership. At the time we speculated that once the Google acquisition is complete we’ll be looking at the real partnership here, which is between Google and Intel, by all means a very interesting association. These two giants, with help of Motorola technology, are going to introduce a bunch of Medfield Android smartphones and tablets, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the next Nexus-branded devices use the Medfield platform and get their design from Motorola engineers.

As for the unnamed Motorola device in the image above, we don’t have that many details about it at this time, but assuming the leaked image is based on an actual product we can’t disregard the obvious similarities with the recent RAZR Android handsets. Furthermore, PocketNow notes that the phone’s camera will be a “major selling point, offering instant-on capabilities as well as 15 frame-per-second burst capture.” Will this Intel-based handset be part of the recently revived RAZR family of phones? We’ll probably find out in a few weeks once the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain kicks off. With the Samsung Galaxy S III not making an appearance at MWC 2012, this unnamed Motorola Medfield handset could turn out to be one of the most important handsets of the Spanish show.
