Minecraft Pocket Edition Flies Past 700,000 Sales

Minecraft Hits It Big On Mobile Phones, Mojang Claims To Sell 5,000 Copies Of Minecraft Pocket Edition Per Day

It seems that would-be architects, city planners, and miners can’t get enough Minecraft, be it on their computer screen or on their mobile phone. Despite the fact that it doesn’t offer nearly as much adventure as it’s PC counterpart, Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan has announced that Minecraft Pocket Edition has hit 700,000 sales.

Minecraft Pocket Edition was released last year on Android phones and went through a period of exclusivity on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play before becoming available to all Android users. For a brief time, it was available through the Android Market for only a dime, a promotion that undoubtedly helped Minecraft Pocket Edition sales skyrocket. Still, even with the sale, 700,000 sales isn’t anything to shake a stick at (especially considering that the game is $6.99 normally), and Kaplan says that Mojang is pulling in about 5,000 sales per day now.

Of course, if you want the full Minecraft experience – which includes crafting and fighting enemies – the PC version is still the way to go. For the moment, Minecraft Pocket Edition only allows building in the game’s creative mode, meaning that Android players are essentially paying for something they can get for free on PC. That will soon change, though, as Mojang has announced that it will be releasing an update next month that adds survival mode to Minecraft Pocket Edition. Here’s to hoping that fighting off an attacking Creeper using touchscreen controls isn’t nearly as difficult as it sounds.

Aside from the PC and Android versions of Minecraft, the little indie game that could is scheduled to land on Xbox 360 sometime later this year, and as far as we know, it’s still coming out on iOS at some point in the near-or-distant future. What do you think – are you planning on buying different versions of Minecraft, or does the PC version suit your needs just fine?
