CES 2012: 13- & 14-inch Samsung Series 5 ULTRA Ultrabooks Get Official

Specs, Features, Pricing Details & Launch Dates Available for Samsung’s New Ultrabook Models

We’ve already seen a few new Ultrabook models at CES 2012, and the show continues with Samsung’s Series 5 ULTRA Ultrabooks, the 13- and 14-inch models which have just gotten official – and yes, they’re called the ULTRA, capital letters included.

The two new ultra-thin and ultra-portable laptops meant to fight the MacBook Air – the rival every Ultrabook maker tries to beat – will ship on January 30 and they will cost $899, the 13-inch version and $1,099, the 14-inch version.

In addition to the 1-inch of extra display real estate what’ different between the two models? Well the 14-inch Series 5 ULTRA also packs a built-in DVD drive, although adding an actual DVD tray to a laptop doesn’t necessarily make it ultra-slim, right? And it’s not even a slot-loading DVD drive.

But let’s move on the rest of the specs and features of these two new Windows 7 Ultrabooks:

  • 13-inch / 14-inch display with 1,366 x 768 resolution and 300-nit display
  • Intel Core i5-2467M processor with Intel integrated GPU
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 500GB 5,400RPM drive with 16GB of ExpressCache for fast booting
  • ExpressCache: 20-second boot time, 2-second wake up, faster start times for frequently used apps
  • Optional 128GB SSD for the 13-inch model
  • 13-inch model: Ethernet, HDMI, 1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, 4-in 1 SD slot
  • 14-inch model: Ethernet, HDMI, 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, SD slot, DVD drive, VGA support, 4-in-1 SD slot
  • Weight: 3.5pounds vs 3.95 pounds
  • Non-backlit QWERTY keyboard
  • Up to 7 hours of battery life
  • Battery Life Plus technology – 80% of battery capacity retained for up to 1,500 charges
  • Aluminum chassis
  • Windows 7

While I’m sure that both models are great machines, neither one has anthing on the MacBook Air. Considering their price, and the fact that they weigh well over 3 pounds each, not to mention that the larger ULTRA model packs a DVD drive too, these are hardly the Ultrabooks you want. They’re not light on price and they’re not even light either.
