CES 2012: Acer Aspire S5 & Aspire Timeline Ultra Ultrabooks Now Official

Acer Announces New Ultrabooks in Las Vegas, Specs, Features, Pricing & Release Dates Available

Acer was the first company to unveil a new line of products at this year’s edition of the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, including three new ultrabooks the Aspire S5 and the 14- and 15-inch Aspire Timeline Ultra.

The Aspire S5 is now dubbed as the “world’s thinnest Ultrabook”, a device that measures just 15mm at its thickest point. The ultrabook weighs 1.35kg and features a 13.3-inch LCD display, Acer Green Instant On and Acer Always Connect technology, Intel Core processor, SSD hard drive, Dolby Home Theater sound, PowerSmart battery and the MagicFlip I/O port that offers a variety of ports: HDMI, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. The MagicFlip port tray is found at the back of the device, and pressing your thumbs on the top corners of the keyboard will open it.

But Acer won’t stop at making just 13-inch ultrabooks. The Aspire Timeline Ultra is a new ultrabook family that offers two models, a 14-inch and a 15-inch one.

In addition to Acer Green Instant On and Acer Always Connect functionality, features Acer keeps insisting with its ultrabooks, the new machines will offer 8 hours of battery life, a 2-spindle design (magnetic hard drive and optical drive support), Intel Core processor, SSD/HDD storage option, Dolby Home Theater v4 surround sound, HDMI, USB 3.0 support and Windows 7.

The Aspire S5 will start shipping in Q2 while the Timeline Ultra models will hit stores in Q1, although pricing details for either models are not available at the time. It will be interesting to see whether Acer will manage to beat Apple’s MacBook Air prices with its new Ultrabook models. Because if it doesn’t do it, then the company has just announced Windows-based machines that cost about as much as a Mac computer, and that’s not what PC makers want, is it? Traditionally, Windows PCs have always been way cheaper than their direct Mac rivals at least until PC makers started rolling out Ultrabooks, laptops which are yet to see an affordable pricing scheme.

Anyone particularly interested in any of the new Acer ultrabook models?

    1. Randy says:

These sound promising on paper. If they are built as strong as a Mac and about 1/2 the price of one then I could see them flying off the shelves. If not, then just add them to the list of other choices for non-Mac users and those that must have a windows based system to run their software…
