CES 2012: Corning Gorilla Glass 2 to be Introduced on January 9
We’ve all heard about Corning Gorilla Glass, it’s that special hardened kind of glass that is used by smartphone and tablet manufacturers (and not only) to create beautiful devices that need damage-resistant glass to withstand drops, hits and other damage-inflicting shocks.

Sure, devices that pack Gorilla Glass made by Corning do break, but they’re still a lot more resistant than regular glass. In fact, those of you that have read “Steve Jobs,” the official biography written by Walter Isaacson, will recall that Apple’s CEO insisted on making the iPhone’s display out of actual glass rather than plastic and that he persuaded Corning to create the kind of glass that could be used on a mobile device, based on existing Corning technology.
Now Corning will launch the second version of its highly acclaimed Gorilla Glass, inconspicuously named Gorilla Glass 2. The new product, which will probably equip plenty of mobile devices in the following years, will be unveiled on Monday, January 9, just in time for CES 2012. Corning Gorilla Glass is already very popular, as its used on more than 500 million units worldwide. In fact, more than 575 products use the special damage-resistant glass:

As you can see, Apple is missing from that list, but that doesn’t mean its iOS devices don’t use Corning Gorilla Glass. The explanation is a different one, provided by Corning: “due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all devices that feature Gorilla Glass. Your favorite device may include Gorilla Glass, even if you don’t see it listed. Ask your manufacturer or retailer to learn more.”
