Sony, Nintendo & Electronic Arts Distance Themselves From SOPA

Nintendo, Sony & EA Drop Support For SOPA, Entertainment Software Association Still Sponsors The Bill

Nintendo, Sony, and Electronic Arts have all joined the growing list of corporations that are dropping support for the Stop Online Piracy Act. It isn’t difficult to see why, considering that SOPA has been met with disdain from the internet using masses, but we’re thinking that in Sony’s case, some other circumstances may have swayed its position.

We’re talking, of course, about the threat from Anonymous. There’s no telling why exactly these three gaming giants decided to drop support for the bill as none of them have commented on the situation, but you can be sure that Sony remembers the fallout from last spring’s PSN attack all too well, and the threat of another attack probably is something the corporation wants to steer clear of.

The hope, however, is that Sony, Nintendo, and Electronic Arts all decided to rescind their support because of the backlash SOPA has been receiving from their consumers. Even though SOPA’s sponsors seem to be dropping like flies, the list is still pretty long, and the Entertainment Software Association – the Association which these three corporations belong to – still backs the legislation. Not only that, but numerous Sony branches have yet to withdraw their support – specifically, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Sony Music Nashville, and Sony Music Entertainment still appear on the list of sponsors.

This is definitely good news for those who enjoy access to a free and unfiltered internet, but the battle is still far from over. Many companies have dropped support after realizing that many of the customers that made them a success don’t like the language in the bill, so hopefully more companies will follow suit once they’re aware that consumers with cash to spend aren’t happy.

What do you think? Will more companies drop support for the bill, or do you think that most will continue to sponsor it? Do you think SOPA will end up on President Obama’s desk? Leave us a comment below with your thoughts!
