Sega: Sonic 4: Episode 2 Not Getting A Wii Release [Sega Says Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Won't Be Releasing On Wii, Doesn't Give A Specific Reason Why]

Yesterday, Sega’s Ken Balough announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 is in the works and will be releasing next year. Not only is Sega working on the next installment of a series that many thought had been abandoned, but Sega’s also using new graphics and physics engines in an effort to fix complaints that fans had with the first episode.

All in all, it sounds like a great deal for fans that bought Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, except when Balough listed off the platforms that Episode 2 will be appearing on, one was mysteriously absent: the Wii. The first episode was released on the Wii, so it was probably just an oversight on Balough’s part that the Wii wasn’t mentioned, right? Wrong!

Sega revealed today that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 will be skipping the Wii, with Ken Balough taking to Sega’s official forums to explain the decision to understandably confused gamers:

The reason Episode I was on the Wii was because we wanted to bring the Sonic 4 saga to the widest possible audience. Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii – for reasons most people have probably guessed, but that doesn’t mean Sega isn’t supporting Nintendo platforms, we have a very strong partnership and will continue to do so.

Balough didn’t give an exact reason, but some think that the WiiWare’s file size restriction is to blame. That restriction is why other games like Machinarium haven’t been released on WiiWare, so it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that Episode 2 exceeds that file size restriction – probably by a significant amount too.

At least Episode 2 is going to be available on a range of other platforms including Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7, so Wii players that will miss out could potentially purchase a different version. It isn’t the most convenient solution, but at least there’s other options to take advantage of.
