Asus Eee PC 1225B Brings New Life To The Netbook [The Netbook Really Isn't That Dead With Asus' Announcement Of The Eee PC 1225B For Release In 2012]

Anyone remember that great bit from Monty Python’s Holy Grail? Yes, I know most of them were great, but the one I’m thinking about is the “bring out your dead” bit. You know, the one where the dead cart is going by collecting those who’ve succumbed to the plague or whatever, and the guy’s trying to throw out the old guy who insists that he’s not, in fact, dead, but feeling much better and considering taking a walk. That’s pretty much all I could think of when I heard that Asus was releasing its new Eee PC 1225B.

The Asus Eee PC 1225B is one of those things we all probably thought didn’t have much chance of surviving in the face of the onslaught of tablets and Ultrabooks to come: a netbook. But what you’ll get is surprisingly robust for a netbook, starting off with your choice of an AMD C60 dual core processor running at 1 GHz or a E450 dual core APU running at 1.65 GHz. You’ll be able to round out the package with as much as four gigs of DDR3 RAM, a minimum of 320 gigs of storage space, a set of both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, VGA and HDMI outputs for access to the bigger displays, and an 11.6 inch display showing at 1366 x 768 resolution.

I don’t mind telling you that, for a netbook, that’s not half bad. There were some desktops that weren’t packing that kind of spec loadout just four years ago, and that’s a pretty big deal in its own right. And perhaps better, the current word says that the prices will start around $455 US when they release in the early going of next year.

If you were one of the many out there who, like me, figured that the netbook was a go-nowhere proposition, well, we may all have to think about this one. If they can keep the specs up on future netbooks and the prices low to match, the coming flood of Ultrabook models may have a little competition on their hands.

But what do you guys think about this one? Figure that the Asus Eee PC 1225B can stand up against its many competitors? Or do you think that this one will be fading out quickly? No matter what your stance, we welcome your opinion down in the comments section below!
