Asus Internal Studies Say “No Issues” With The Transformer Prime Name [Despite Word Of A Lawsuit From Hasbro, Asus Looks To Carry On Making & Selling The Asus Transformer Prime]
Just four days ago, when many of you were likely finishing up your last-minute Christmas preparations, our own J. Angelo Racoma brought us word of Hasbro taking issue to the point of lawsuit with the Asus Transformer Prime. Even I set out a comment on that one, being rather unsurprised that Hasbro would go that route given that they’d released an animated series by almost the same name, Transformers Prime. But now, reports have emerged suggesting that Asus’ intended response to the Hasbro suit is really nothing much at all.

The reports in question say that Asus has studied the issue and found it to really be no issue at all. While Hasbro reportedly believes that the name “Transformer Prime” would cause “confusion” among potential users, the stance Asus appears to be taking is that no one is likely to mistake a tablet with an attached keyboard that can fold up out of the way and be used like a normal flat tablet for a big robot that can turn into a car, plane, or assorted what have you.
And on the surface this seems perfectly rational. It’s really rather hard to mistake an Asus Transformer Prime for, say, any version of Megatron, from the Walther PPK version to the dinosaur clear up to the giant plane. But it’s not too hard to see where Hasbro is coming from here, especially as, as mentioned above, they had already released a cartoon of the same name removed by one letter.

And by like token, it’s tough to sympathize with Hasbro being as Asus has already released the Asus Eee Pad Transformer previously, and Hasbro didn’t seem terribly upset by that one despite the fact that it did sufficiently well at market to make it competition for the fabled iPad at one point.
A minor name change may fix this–the Transformer 2, perhaps–but I don’t look for this to stop Asus in any great degree. But what do you guys think about this one? Think that Hasbro’s got case enough to take out the Transformer Prime? Think that Asus has the edge here? No matter what you think, we always like hearing from you, so hit the comments section below and fill us in!
