Trion Worlds Account Database Compromised
The folks at Trion Worlds woke up this morning to discover a big lump of coal in their stocking: Tron’s account database has been hacked, and it appears that a significant amount of personal information is at risk. The Rift developer says that addresses, names, dates of birth, encrypted passwords, and the expiration dates, first four digits, and last four digits of customer’s credit cards are stored on the server.

However, Trion Worlds said in a statement that there’s no evidence that full credit card details were stolen, and at least the passwords that are stored on the server are encrypted. Still, this is probably a very uneasy situation for all of those Rift subscribers as they wait for Trion to investigate the breach further.
The good news is that Rift servers are still online. Those logging in through Trion’s website will be forced to change their passwords, and changing your password will net you three free days of game time the Moneybags Purse – an item that increases gold drops by 10% – as any apology for the inconvenience.

Trion World’s security breach follows on the heels of the Square Enix Members attack that occurred last week. Thankfully, no personal information was accessed in the Square Enix Members hack, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like Trion Worlds is going to get off quite as easy. However Trion Worlds fares in this attack, one thing is sure: 2011 has definitely become the year of the security breach.
Here’s to hoping that 2012 will be a little more quiet, but with the wedge between publishers and gamers apparently growing larger, I doubt that will be the case. What do you think? Will the attacks calm down in 2012, or are we just getting started? Are you a Rift player that’s been affected by the breach? Head down to the comments section to sound off, and keep it tuned here to TFTS for more information about the Trion Worlds attack.
