Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet, Here Is How You Can Stop Those Automatic OTA Updates [Latest Nook Tablet OTA Update Blocked Sideloading Of Apps, Here Is How To Stop Those Updates & Make Sure You Keep The Current Functionality]

Barnes & Noble recently updated the software on the Nook Tablet, and well, while the update was nice as a whole it did remove some functionality. And sure, that little bit that was removed in version 1.4.1 is probably not going to be missed by everyone, but at the same time we suspect that more than a few of the TFTS readers were disappointed.

Before we get ahead of ourselves here. The latest Nook Tablet software update began rolling out earlier this week. Barnes & Noble released the software as version 1.4.1 and as the Nook Tablet is set to do — it will automatically download and install the update in the background. Those with a Nook Tablet will be made aware of the update by the little green “n” in the left side status bar.

Anyway, according to the details provided by Barnes & Noble on this one, the update offered “minor system updates.” Of course, as the interwebs soon realized, those minor system updates were removing the ability to sideload apps. Take that and combine it with the previous update that limited the amount of internal storage — and some may want to stop these updates from automatically being applied.

Such being the case, it seems the interwebs have come to the rescue. Or more specifically, Indirect from the xda-developers forums has come to the rescue. According to the details being provided by Indirect, this process will switch your Account name in the About Your Nook section to “Unavailable” (as seen in the above image) which will in-turn block those updates from automatically being applied. In terms of making this happen; the steps seem simple enough, though as always — do this at your own risk.

“First: Download the files unzip them, and put all 3 into the TitaniumBackup folder on your sdcard (you need to download Titanium backup from market for this just FYI).

Then start titanium backup, grant root if you havent already and restore “DeviceManagerService 2.3.4″ and then poof! You have now blocked OTA’s. I’ll actually try and make this happen in my script so new people can do it but you can tell if it worked by going into settings>about my nook>Version Number:9.9.9″

With that, you can head on over to the xda-developers forums and download the needed file by clicking here.

This is incorrect, it allows access to B&N still while only changing a few backend settings which aren’t shown to the user. I just had it change software version as a way to show it worked.
