Air Dictate Turns Siri Into Dictation Software

Siri Learns How To Take Dictation With A Combination Of Air Dictate & A Regular Mac PC

You know, I don’t even use that much Apple hardware. When I saw the I’m A Mac / I’m A PC commercials, I pretty much knew I was a PC. But one thing that’s really made me smile most every time I come in contact with it is Siri, because people keep finding the coolest things to do with it. And now, thanks to an app called Air Dictate, Siri can convert your speech into text.

Since there aren’t any public APIs involved in using Siri as a dictation system, Avatron, the folks behind Air Dictate, managed to do the job with an app. Basically, you’ll be using Siri and your iPhone 4S to serve as a microphone with speech recognition capability, the results of which can then be funneled to your Mac device running at least OS X 10.6.8 and the Air Dictate Receiver app, for use in a variety of programs like Word, Pages, or anything else that runs on text.

Having used speech to text programs before–I’m personally fond of Dragon Naturally Speaking–I can say that the concept itself is a good one to have, especially if you already have an iPhone 4S and the necessary Mac hardware waiting on the back end to control the resulting product. The downside here, naturally, is that you’d need to have the necessary hardware, and not be interested in one of the various speech recognition programs that are already out there for your Mac (and of course your PC), which means the actual number of people interested in the program might be a bit on the slim side.

And aside from that, this just adds to the already impressively stocked list of things that we’ve seen Siri doing. Playing piano, adjusting thermostats, even adjusting the settings on the iPhone 4S on which it’s operating is just the beginning…at least, so far. And it’s really starting to make me wonder just what Siri’s going to pull out of its seemingly bottomless hat next.

So what do you guys think? Anyone got a guess on just what Siri will do next? There are plenty of possibilities, so head on down to the comments section below and hit us with your best guess!
