WD TV Live Adds More Options To Its Lineup

Both WD TV Live Units & TV Live Hub Units Will Pick Up Vudu & A Little More Thanks To The Latest Update

The last time we’d heard about an update for the WD TV Live was back in October, when we first got word about Spotify landing on the set-top box system. And while updates had kept apace, bringing new functionality with every new version, things were quiet for a while, until now. Both WD TV Live units and the somewhat newer TV Live Hub systems have just picked up a new update, and there’s plenty going on in there.

Not only do the boxes now have access to Vudu, which is another, somewhat lesser known streaming service backed up by Walmart, but they’ve also picked up a more functional trick: the ability to be controlled remotely from your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. A few devices, not least of which includes the VooMote line, have tried turning the iOS devices into universal remotes before, so this isn’t exactly a huge step forward, but at last report, this one won’t require a dongle to pull off the transformation, which is something of an achievement in its own right.

You’ve already had plenty of streaming options from your WD Live or TV Live Hub, like Netflix, Blockbuster and Hulu, but the newest update also includes a whole variety of new services that you’ve probably never even heard of, like Snagfilms, XOS College Sports, the SEC Digital Network, and Comedy Time, among a few others, giving this one quite a bit more value than you may have thought was there originally. Checking out the lineups on some of these offerings is a bit sparse (turns out that Comedy Time, for example, is a made for mobile network that’s been around since 2004 in one form or another, and has, at last report, over 3.5 million subscribers), but you’ll likely find something worthwhile on.

The bad news here, of course, is that Android users will be left out in the cold, temporarily, as Western Digital’s next move is to get an Android version around and ready. This will likely take some time, but any wait is likely too long for the Android users.

So what do you guys think about this one? Think you might be interested in a WD Live or a TV Live Hub with the new upgrades? Or do you figure that you can do better when it comes to streaming media? No matter what you think, we definitely want to hear from you, so head on down to the comments section and tell us what you think!
