Over 1 Trillion YouTube Video PlayBacks Registered for 2011

YouTube Brags With Video Numbers, Reaches More Than 1 Trillion Video Views This Year Alone

YouTube is by far one of the most popular websites on Earth and one of Google’s most prized asset. In fact the official YouTube blog posted the best videos of 2011, and there’s even a special section available on the video sharing site that will take you through the most popular videos of the year (youtube.com/rewind) – or go past the jump to see them all right here.

But what’s really interesting about YouTube looking back at 2011 is the impressive number of video playbacks registered for the year that’s about to end. Over 1 trillion playbacks were recorded for the year, a record so far when it comes to YouTube stats:

In total, there were more than 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) playbacks on YouTube this year (yep, count ‘em, 12 zeroes). That’s about 140 views for every person on the earth. More than twice as many stars as in the Milky Way. And if I had a penny for every … OK, you get my drift, it’s a big number.

The video below, posted today on the YouTube channel and starring music prodigy Rebecca Black goes through the most viewed YouTube videos globally, not including videos from major music labels.

Surprisingly, or not, one of Rebecca Black’s YouTube videos is at number one, unfortunately for her that clip also has an increasing number of dislikes. But here’s the full list of popular YouTube videos for 2011, and the number of hits for each one:

1. Rebecca Black – Friday (OFFICIAL VIDEO) – 12,637,386 hits

2. Ultimate Dog Tease – 74,778,371 hits

3. Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton)

4. Talking Twin Babies – PART 2 – OFFICIAL VIDEO – 56,354,483 hits

5. Nyan Cat [original] – 53,946,556 hits

6. Look At Me Now – Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes (Cover by @KarminMusic) – 49,648,268 hits

7. The Creep (feat. Nicki Minaj & John Waters) – 48,562,705 hits – (embedding not available)

8. Maria Aragon – Born This Way (Cover) by Lady Gaga – 45,108,486 hits

9. The Force: Volkswagen Commercial – 45,248,798 hits

10. Cat mom hugs baby kitten – 37,844,215 hits

On second thought, considering the hits registered for each of the videos above, maybe the video at number 1 shouldn’t be there in the first place, but maybe we’re just missing something here.

Getting back to the impressive number of video playbacks YouTube registered in 2011, it’s no wonder that Google wants to bring more and more paid content to YouTube. After all, if people are watching so many videos on YouTube, from all sorts of devices, many of them will certainly be interested in paying for movies and TV shows, wouldn’t they?
