Pong Research’s New iPad Case Offers Impressive Extras [Pong Research's iPad Case Offers Extras That You May Not Expect From An iPad Case]
Most people have certain basic expectations as far as iPad cases go. The basic of the basic, of course, is that it hold your iPad. From there, there are other options that make some sense: maybe it offers a keyboard, or extra battery life, or a particularly hard shell to keep your iPad protected. But if you’ve ever wanted your iPad case to reduce the ambient radiation the iPad gives off and improve its 3G signal strength, well, you’re about to get your way with the Pong Research iPad case.

If you’re wondering how an iPad case can both reduce radiation and improve signal strength, you’re not alone there. As it turns out, and as was discovered via FCC testing, the standard iPad 2 with 3G includes a proximity sensor. And when someone gets too close, it cuts the power on the 3G radio down so as not to possibly harm the user. But this power cut may drop the effectiveness of the signal by as much as 75 percent, and that means you’re going to have a much harder time connecting and at higher speeds. This also, reportedly, explains why your 3G signal may get weaker when using a Smart Cover.
But with Pong Research’s case, the part of the case which would have covered the proximity sensor, and thus activated the signal power loss, has been replaced with nothing. That’s right– a little hole over the proximity sensor, which keeps the sensor from being blocked and thus activated. And what’s more, the case in question uses a special kind of circuit board design to take the excess radiation and channel it away from the user.

To top it all off, it even offers a kind of kickstand feature, which allows you to use your iPad on an angle, a lot more convenient for some users.
The whole case itself will set you back $100, but for safer and more effective iPad use, I figure that would likely get plenty of users interested in this option. Sure, it doesn’t make typing easier or offer insulation against bumps and scrapes, but improved performance is hard to turn down.
And what do you guys think here? Anyone like the looks of this $100 iPad case that’s set to give you a boost in signal strength, and safely besides? Or do you figure there are better cases out there for the money? No matter what you think, head on down to the comments section and fill us in!
