No Personal Data Stolen In Square Enix Members Hack
It’s been just under a week since we found out that Square Enix Members had suffered a security breach, and in the time since, Square Enix has been scrambling to figure out what kind of information was accessed in the hack and which was left alone. Initially, reports from Japan said that the personal information of 1.8 million users was put at risk, but Square Enix was quick to clarify that 1.8 million was the absolute worst-case scenario, and that even though it was still investigating the breach, there was no evidence that any personal data theft occurred.

Despite Square Enix’s reassurance, these past few days must have been tense for those 1.8 million users in the US and Japan. Well, you can all take a sigh of relief now, as Square Enix has announced that user accounts were not accessed in the breach. The publisher updated the notice that shows when Square Enix Members is accessed earlier today, stating that the server containing user information was left untouched in the intrusion, so everything is all good on that front.
Unfortunately, Square Enix Members is still offline in the US and Japan, and likely will remain down for the next couple of days. Square Enix didn’t say why the website was still down, but said that the site should come back online by the end of December. All in all, Square Enix Members users come out of this relatively unscathed – they’ve had to go without access to the site for a little while now, but they’re all lucky that things weren’t worse.
So, some good news coming from Square Enix about a tense and unfortunate event. It makes you wonder, though – if there wasn’t any personal information stolen, what was the hacker after, and why is it taking Square Enix so long to bring the website back online? Head down to the comments section to speculate away, and keep checking back here for updates as we’ll be letting you know when Square Enix Members comes back online!
