Remedy: Alan Wake's American Nightmare Will Have More Action Than Original
We’ve been all about Alan Wake news lately – first, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare was revealed last weekend at the Spike VGAs. Shortly after that, rumors of an Alan Wake PC release started circulating, only to be confirmed just a day later by developer Remedy Entertainment. The Alan Wake news train continues rolling, as we’ve got some more information about Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, straight from the mouth of Remedy vice president Aki Järvilehto.

Järvilehto recently sat down for an interview with Eurogamer, during which he discussed the changes the team is making to the Alan Wake formula in American Nightmare. According to him, fans of the original Alan Wake were left wanting more action, an issue that Remedy looks to address in the series’ next installment:
One of the things about Alan Wake is that people loved the story, the setting and the theme but people wanted more in-your-face action, people wanted more variation, different types of enemies and different types of weapons.
Järvilehto kept quiet on what kind of action players can expect in American Nightmare‘s narrative, but said that one of the ways Remedy will add more action sequences to the game is through the introduction of Fight ’til Dawn mode, a new arcade type mode that’s apparently similar to Gears of War 3‘s Horde mode. Järvilehto says that Fight ’til Dawn mode is faster-paced than what you’d typically expect from Alan Wake, something he claims is expected of Xbox Live Arcade titles.

I don’t doubt that some fans felt starved for action at the end of Alan Wake, but Remedy needs to tread carefully in making Alan Wake a more action-oriented series, lest they alienate the fans that we drawn to the original’s suspense-filled gameplay. Resident Evil is guilty of such a crime, and to this day, gamers lament the action-focused gameplay found in Resident Evil‘s more recent installments.
What do you think? Was Alan Wake in need of more action, or do you think it was fine the way it was? Are you interested in seeing what Alan Wake’s American Nightmare has to offer, or has all of this talk of action turned you off? Share your opinion in the comments section below!
