Redbox Top 10 Game Rentals Of 2011 Revealed
2011 was pretty big for Redbox, at least as far as video games are concerned. Redbox started offering video games at the beginning of the year, testing the idea with a few kiosks at first and then slowly rolling out video game rentals to other kiosks as the year went on. A couple of months back, Redbox announced that its experiment with video game rentals had worked, and that Wii games were the most-rented games at a number of kiosks across the country.

Today, however, Redbox revealed its top 10 game rentals of 2011, and despite what those earlier reports would lead you to believe, the Xbox 360 shows up the most in the top 10. Naturally, Modern Warfare 3 takes the top spot on the list, with Dead Island, Skyrim, and Brink all managing to rank as well. Core gamers aren’t the only ones renting games from Redbox either, with families and more casual gamers likely responsible for showings from Just Dance 3, Cars 2, and The Smurfs Dance Party. Take a look at the full top 10 list:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Xbox 360)
- Just Dance 3 (Wii)
- Dead Island (Xbox 360)
- Cars 2 (Wii)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3)
- Brink (Xbox 360)
- The Smurfs Dance Party (Wii)
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360)
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Xbox 360)
Strangely enough, the only group that isn’t well represented in that list are PS3 gamers. I’m also surprised that more Wii games didn’t appear on the list – with no form of online pass all that prevalent on the Wii, Wii games make the perfect candidates for rentals. It’s also safe to assume that Redbox experienced a huge surge in game rentals when Modern Warfare 3 released, considering that Modern Warfare 3 has only been available for around a month and still managed to take first and fifth place.

In any case, it’ll be interesting to compare Redbox’s list of rentals to the top sellers of 2011, a list we probably won’t have until sometime in January. Of course, Modern Warfare 3 will most likely be at the top, but we’ll almost definitely see games like Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3, and Uncharted 3 rank among 2011′s biggest sellers. I’m also thinking that games like Cars 2 and The Smurfs Dance Party probably won’t be making an appearance.
