New Siri Hack Adds Even More Functionality
Siri, much like Cousin Eddie remarked on Clark’s Jelly of the Month Club membership in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, is the gift that keeps on giving the whole year round. And a new hack that’s emerged for the hotly popular voice control system has offered up some interesting new functionality for your iPhone 4S, even more so than it already offers.

Basically, this latest hack actually manages to turn Siri inward on itself, and more specifically, on the iPhone 4S it’s running on, to allow you a level of control over the settings on the iPhone 4S itself. Developed by Hamza Sood, this hack allows you to, for example, change the level of backlighting on your iPhone 4S, or find out just how much life is left in the iPhone 4S’s battery systems, among several other things including the strength of your internet connection and the like. Sood reportedly used MobileSubstrate to add settings support to Siri, and this without requiring a proxy server.
The down side here, though, is that actually putting Sood’s hack in play requires a jailbroken iPhone 4S, which isn’t exactly widely available. Tethered, sure, but an untethered hack isn’t yet widely available. It’s in the process, though, which means pretty soon you may well be able to find out all the various status issues with your iPhone 4S simply by issuing a voice command.

And that in turn is probably going to make this hack pretty big once it finally goes widely available. Many of the battery issues reported so far were suggested to have reasonably simple fixes like shutting down your various internet connections, and being able to do so with simple voice commands is a whole lot easier than trying to sift through the command menus that Apple usually offers up. It’s enough to make me wonder why Apple didn’t just do all this to begin with.
But what do you guys think here? Anyone want to get their hands on this latest Siri hack? Or do you think there’s a limit to just how far voice control should go? No matter what you think, we always like hearing from you, so head on down to the comments section below and fill us in!
