1.8 Million Accounts Possibly Compromised In Square Enix Members Breach
Are you a Square Enix Members user? If so, there’s a good chance that your personal information is out in the open right now. Yesterday Square Enix notified Square Enix Members users of a security breach on one of the site’s servers and promptly took the website offline. Square Enix reported that personal information of users from North America and Japan was stored on the hacked server, but didn’t give an estimate of how many user accounts were actually compromised.

Today we have a better idea of the damage, and unfortunately the news isn’t pretty. According to Andriasang, NHK is reporting that as many as 1.8 million user accounts were compromised in the breach, a number that is truly staggering when you learn that Square Enix Members only boasts 2.1 million members worldwide. The report implies that Square Enix doesn’t know the number for sure, but that 1.8 million is something more of a worst case scenario.
Still, it stands to reason that at least a portion of those 1.8 million users have had their account information stolen. There is a glimmer of good news in that credit card information wasn’t stored on the hacked server – only data like names, email addresses, and phone numbers – but those who use the same log in information across multiple accounts run the risk of having those other accounts accessed by unfavorable people. Change those passwords, folks!

The Square Enix Members site is still down today, and Square Enix hasn’t provided any info on when it will return. The site will probably remain offline for at least the next couple of days while Square Enix investigates the breach further, so here’s to hoping that it isn’t down for as long as PSN was back in the spring.
Do you have an account over at Square Enix Members? If you do, have you seen any suspicious activity with any of your other accounts in the past day or so? Head down to the comments section to let us know, and keep it here with us at TFTS – we’ll continue to update you on this Square Enix Members mess!
