Square Enix Members Site Hacked, Website Taken Offline

Square Enix Takes Square Enix Members Site Offline As It Investigates Security Breach

Square Enix has announced that hackers have gained access to a server used for the Square Enix Members site in Japan and North America. As a result, Square Enix has decided to take the site offline in both regions while it examines the breach to determine how the hackers got it and what kind of information they accessed.

Instead of the Square Enix Members landing page, users are now greeted with a statement from the publisher which explained when it became aware of the breach and what it thinks was compromised. The good news is that no credit card information was stored on that server, but Square Enix warns that other personal information could have been stolen in the breach:

We are assessing the full extent of this potential breach to determine what data, if any, was compromised and will provide more details as soon as possible. While some personal information may have been accessed, we can confirm that there is no possibility of any credit card information leak from this incident, since the server in question stores no credit card information. We estimate that the suspension will continue for a few days until we complete our investigation and counter-measures. We will update you as we learn more.

Gamers are no stranger to attacks such as this, with the now infamous PSN attacks occurring the past spring. After the PSN debacle was resolved, LulzSec began indiscriminately hacking video game websites just for the fun of it. As always, if you’re a Square Enix Members user and you use the same log in credentials across multiple online accounts, it’s a good idea to change your passwords now instead of waiting for Square Enix to confirm that log in information was stolen in the breach.
