ExoPC Offers Update On ExoDesk, Both Versions Of It

Two Versions Of The ExoDesk Computer System Set To Be Available, More Specs Emerge From There

We were still looking forward to a whopping Thanksgiving feast when the news first slipped out about the ExoDesk from ExoPC, and now, with Christmas squarely in our sights (not to mention Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and the like), we’ve got an update about both versions of the ExoDesk. Yes, both versions–there will be two of them to come. And there will be some pretty significant differences once they arrive.

ExoPC, at last report, does indeed have two different models of ExoDesk waiting in the wings, including one that works only as an external display, which means you’ll need to hook up your own desktop to it and make this what may well be the world’s most impressive computer monitor, as well as one that packs in its own processor, a hefty Intel Core i7 that runs Windows 7 for an operating system.Plus, we also know that apps specifically designed for the ExoDesk will be available directly from the EXOstore, ExoPC’s own selling arm, and that they’ll be coded in HTML5, which should provide some interesting clues as to what these will be able to do. In fact, ExoPC has already dropped the dime on a variety of possibilities, including a news reader, various board games, and even some virtual keyboards.

But then, things got interesting. While we’re going to see the ExoDesk in action out at the 2012 CES show, there’s also some word that says it won’t be alone. Some reports suggest that ViewSonic will have a similar device-a smaller 32 inch variety–out at the big show ready for action, though when that one will be available–if ever–remains to be seen.

And this should put a lot of cachet in ExoPC’s ExoDesk. If ViewSonic’s readying a competitor, even just for show, it proves that they’ve got some faith in the concept, otherwise they wouldn’t be putting R&D manhours to work on it. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this one turns out when it hits the CES show in January.

So what do you guys think? Think you might like to upgrade your PC by hooking it up to a big monitor that serves as a touch screen-based desk? Or do you think this will likely be an overpriced boondoggle in the making? No matter what you think, we always like hearing from you, and the comments section below is just the place to do that!
