Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 5.0 Makes Unexpected Appearance

iOS 5.0 Untethered Jailbreak Lands For The First Time, Though Not Yet Available To The Public At Large

Pretty much ever since iOS 5.0 made its first appearance–and its subsequent update to 5.0.1 followed–some out there have been trying to find a way to jailbreak the thing, and plenty of users have been craving the opportunity to get in on it. And while several tethered jailbreaks have emerged previously, what most have been waiting for was an untethered jailbreak. And now, in a recently-discovered YouTube video, the distinction seems to have been made.

The video–and the jailbreak in question behind it–was announced by iPhone hacker pod2g, whose efforts to bring out an untethered jailbreak go back at least as far as November, when we first brought you word of his efforts. But judging from the video, he may have actually found that bug in iOS 5 that turned out to be the key to a jailbreak after all.

You’ll be able to see the jailbreak in action yourself down in the YouTube video below, and shows that it’s untethered as the jailbreak continues on even after you reboot the phone. There are some caveats here with this one–one, he’s got it running on what looks like an iPod Touch rather than an iPhone, and it also seems to be running on iOS 5.0, as opposed to iOS 5.0.1, so downgrading may be necessary to get this to run when it finally comes out. And naturally, Apple itself will likely be doing everything it can to prevent the launch of same by sealing any of the cracks through which it emerged. Some have begun to question the need for jailbreaking in the first place, as much of what jailbreakers have made available–like a drop-down notifications system–has been co-opted onto iOS 5.

But still, for those of you who want to get your hands on untethered jailbreaking for iOS 5, you may be able to do so sooner than you thought. And how many of you out there plan to get hands on this one when it emerges? Or have you come to think like some do, that jailbreaking iOS 5 is starting to look pretty pointless when you consider what all it’s got on it already? No matter what you think, we love hearing from you, so head on down to the comments section and tell us what you think!
