Barnes & Noble recently unveiled its own ultra-affordable Android tablet, the Nook Tablet, and then it started selling the device around the same time the Kindle Fire was launched. But while Amazon has already announced record Kindle Fire sales – without actually mentioning any sales numbers – Barnes & Noble is even more quiet when it comes to the total number of Nook Tablets sold to date.
A new report coming from DigiTimes claims that the company ordered one million units from its suppliers. However, as impressive as that number may be, it doesn’t necessarily mean Barnes & Noble actually sold that many Nook Tablet units:
Barnes & Noble should have so far taken delivery of one million units of Nook Tablet PCs from OEM production partners, according to an estimate by sources at upstream suppliers.
Barnes & Noble has been increasing its orders to upstream component suppliers as well as OEM contractor Inventec due to strong sales in retail channels during the Thanksgiving holiday season in North America, said the sources.
Considering that the Christmas shopping season is far from over, Barnes & Noble, but also Amazon, could end up selling even more affordable Android tablets in the following weeks.
Barnes & Noble was reportedly expected to order 800,000 Nook Tablet units by the end of the year. That’s a number clearly inferior to Kindle Fire sales estimates that suggested Amazon could sell a few million units during the same period. However, until both company declare actual Android tablet sales for 2011, we have no way of telling which tablet was the most popular this holiday season.
