Pirate Serious Sam 3: BFE, Get Chased By A Giant Pink Scorpion

Croteam Implements Unique DRM To Fight Serious Sam 3: BFE Piracy

We’re not big fans of DRM around here. The thing is, we understand a publisher’s need to protect their investment from software pirates, but at the same time, we tend side with the consumer in that we don’t think DRM should only be a hassle for those who purchase the game legally.

Most developers and publishers choose to ignore the outrage from the justifiably angry paying customers, but some are getting it right. One of the studios that gets DRM right is Croteam, which recently released Serious Sam 3: BFE. Croteam and Serious Sam 3 publisher Devolver Digital have spoken out against restrictive DRMs in the past, but that distaste for DRM didn’t stop them from implementing one of their own in Serious Sam 3: BFE.

The only difference here is that Croteam’s Serious Sam 3 DRM leaves legal players untouched while making the pirate’s experience something more of a living hell. Pirating Serious Sam 3: BFE will cause a giant pink scorpion to spawn when you start up a game. This pink scorpion moves lighting fast and is invincible, so in addition to fighting off the game’s hordes of enemies, pirates will also have to deal will relentless attacks from an unkillable scorpion.

That’s pretty harsh, but hey, pirates don’t really have much to complain about. Buy the game and the scorpion goes away, it’s as simple as that. Personally, I’d like to see more publishers do stuff like this, if only because it’s a pain in the ass for those give the PC platform such a bad reputation.

If those of you who bought the game legally would like to see the immortal pink scorpion in action, check out the video below, and then head down to the comments section to tell us what you think of DRM like this – is it better, or is all DRM bad? Leave a comment with your thoughts!

This is awesome. I think restrictive DRM is certainly a bad thing since it punishes legal players. However, this is something that I can get behind. Sure, I don’t think all games are worth my money, but that doesn’t mean I steal them. And for those who do, well, they get what’s coming for them. And what’s coming for them is an unkillable scorpion who moves faster than you do.
