Retailers Reporting 3DS Sell Outs In UK

If there was any doubt before, there’s shouldn’t be now – the 3DS has bounced back. The price cut Nintendo implemented earlier this year seems to have really turned things around for the once struggling handheld, and its popularity has grown to the point that retailers in the UK are reporting that the 3DS is selling out.

That news comes from MCV, which reports that the flame red 3DS variant is sold out at most stores across the UK, with the supply of other 3DS models dwindling fast. This particular surge is sales can be attributed to one guy: Mario. Whereas before the 3DS didn’t have any noteworthy first party titles (aside from a couple of N64 remakes), Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have officially launched in regions around the world (and in close proximity to one another), sparking a new interest in the handheld worldwide.

Not only that, but Nintendo’s recently released Super Mario 3D Land bundle has experienced great sales internationally as well. Things will only get better for Nintendo as we get closer to Christmas, and I expect that we’ll see 3DS handhelds sold out in more places as we approach the end of the month. The real test for the 3DS will be going into the new year, where game sales typically drop off for months at a time as we wait for the autumn rush to come back around.

It just goes to show how powerful Mario really is when it comes to marketing a new console. Hopefully Nintendo takes something away from the fact that Mario helped save the 3DS and rocket it to the top of the charts. Let’s not launch a console without him again, eh guys?
