Uncharted Series Hits 13 Million Total Sales

Back when Uncharted 3 launched at the beginning of November, it was in for a fight. Uncharted 3 was going up against 2011′s biggest releases – Battlefield 3 had released just six days before, with Modern Warfare 3 following by seven days and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by ten.

Not favorable odds, and most developers would be considered crazy for even thinking about launching in the middle of all of that. However, Uncharted 3 seems to have hit gold despite the tough competition, with Sony‘s Asad Quizilbash reporting in an interview with IndustryGamers that Uncharted 3 sold twice what Uncharted 2 did on launch day. Any you way you slice it, that’s some major growth that’s made even more impressive by the fact that it’s only been a couple of years since the last Uncharted title.

We don’t have any specific sales numbers, but Sony said that it shipped 3.6 million copies of Uncharted 3 for launch day, so it’s safe to assume that the majority of those copies found a home on day one. Not only that, but Naughty Dog also says that the Uncharted series has surpassed 13 million sales worldwide, no small feat, and an accomplishment that I’m sure many think the Uncharted series is deserving of.

I haven’t played Uncharted 3 yet, but I’ve only heard good things. Maybe Skyrim will loosen its grip on me long enough to check it out, but at moment, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. In any case, it’s certainly good to hear that Naughty Dog’s franchise has been met with such success, but now there’s a small problem – the financial success of Uncharted 3 kind of negates the developer’s excuse for why the game needs an online pass.
