iPhone 4S Unlock Looks Promising, iPhone Dev Team Says

When looking at the iOS jailbreaking/unlocking ecosystem we’ll always witness a cat and mouse game between Apple and hackers. One one hand Apple is trying to block them from jailbreaking and subsequently unlocking (where applicable) iOS devices and on the other hand these devs are always trying to find new holes that they can take advantage of.

Today we hear, straight from iPhone Dev Team’s MuscleNerd that an iPhone 4S unlock seems very promising and that such a tool is in the works. What’s very interesting about this rumored unlock is that it wouldn’t cover the iPhone 4, an almost impenetrable bastion, when it comes to carrier unlocks – the unofficial kind. Here’s what MucleNerd tweeted:

That also must mean that an iPhone 4S jailbreak is also going to be official soon, and that implies that an iPad 2 jailbreak will also soon be possible. Unlocking the handset without a jailbreak is impossible in most cases, and that’s why we’d expect the iPhone Dev Team to release a new jailbreak tool that would also work on the iDevices launched this year.

In case you didn’t already know it, jailbreaking iOS 5.0 / iOS 5.0.1 is possible so far on most supported devices, with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 being the only exceptions, considering they’re new hardware designs that don’t sport the same security flaws hackers found in previous generations.

As for iPhone unlocking, Apple is winning that battle so far, as its most iPhone 4 units and the iPhone 4S can’t be unlocked at this time using unofficial tools. The iPhone 4 has been one of the most resistant iPhone versions to unlock tools with only a limited batch of devices working with Ultrasn0w.

MuscleNerd didn’t mention when the new jailbreak and unlock tools for the iPhone 4S will be released, so you’ll still have to patiently wait for them to become official.
