Miyamoto Not Crazy About Mario Kart 7 Customization [Shigeru Miyamoto Initially Uneasy About New Customization Options In Mario Kart 7]
When Mario Kart 7 finally arrives for the 3DS in about a week and a half, it will come sporting features that are new to the Mario Kart series. For instance, there will be things like hang gliding and driving underwater, and there will also be some customization options, allowing players to earn coins and spend them on new parts for their carts.

It sounds great to me, because if I have one complaint about the Mario Kart series, it’s that it doesn’t change all that much from installment to installment. Even though it seems like many are embracing the idea of these new features, there’s one person who isn’t too crazy about them: Shigeru Miyamoto. In a new interview with Famitsu (as translated by 1up), Miyamoto explained why he isn’t as excited about Mario Kart 7‘s new features as we might expect:
I was actually pretty well against some of the customization features of the game, though. It can be fun to win money for racing and use it to buy parts and such, but I didn’t think that had much to do with the core fun of the series. The idea for that came from the studio staff, though, and my final response was ‘If you can build this customization on top of a solid control and gameplay foundation, then go ahead.’
Sometimes people yelled at me to look at things more closely, but like I said, the core of Mario Kart is pretty solid by this point and I think it’s safe to have it evolve in a pretty staid and traditional manner.
While I can see Miyamoto’s desire to keep the core gameplay that made Mario Kart into a beloved video game franchise in tact, I also think that there should be some innovation between entries. Mario Kart 7 looks like it’s going to be a completely unique Mario Kart and experience, and for that reason, I (along with many Nintendo fans) really want it. Nintendo would do well to remember that innovation does a lot to get players excited for a franchise’s latest.
What do you think? Are you excited for the new customization options in Mario Kart 7, or do you agree with Miyamoto in this instance? Head down to the comments section to tell us what you think, and remember – Mario Kart 7 is out on 3DS on December 4th!
