iPhone 4S vs Galaxy S II: Samsung Takes the Ad Fight to a New Level, Harasses iPhone 4S [Samsung Takes Hits at Apple in New Commercial, Probably Jealous for Lack of Lines]

I bet you didn’t see this coming, especially with the gigantic legal battle between the two companies, but Samsung has launched a new commercial whose whole point is to make fun of Apple’s recently launched iPhone 4S.

In the 60-second clip embedded below, Samsung tries to make fun of iPhone 4S buyers, and iPhone buyers in general, that line up in front of Apple stores ahead of new product launches to be among the first customers to buy the new device. And then Samsung will have you believe that folks in line would be wooed by a Galaxy S II that suddenly appears. Like that would happen with buyers that are so convinced they want the new iPhone that they would be willing to stand in line of the stores for hours to make sure they get a device on launch day.

While the ad is mildly funny, Samsung is oblivious to the reality, which is that the iPhone 4S is far more popular than the Galaxy S II handsets right now. They tend to forget the iPhone 4S sold in 4 million units in just three days, and the iPhone 4S has probably beaten the Galaxy S II – the flagship Samsung device meant to fight the iPhone 4S this year – when it comes to overall sales, even though it was launched only five weeks ago compared to the Galaxy S II which was launched earlier this summer. Sure, Samsung sold more smartphones last quarter – partly because iPhone buyers were waiting for the iPhone 4S to arrive – but only a small portion of those were Galaxy S II units compared to Apple, which only sold iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS models. And sure the ad shows that the iPhone 4S has various issues and problems that are yet to be ironed out, but that doesn’t mean Samsung’s devices are flaw-free, and yes, I’m talking about the Galaxy Nexus volume issues here.

Furthermore, Samsung, either on its own fault or because of U.S. carriers, has delayed the U.S. launch of the Galaxy S II, and it only brought it to three major mobile operators, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. In the mean time we haven’t heard of Galaxy S II fans lining up in front carrier stores, which is probably why Samsung is jealous in the first place.

Not to mention that Samsung is fighting the wrong battle here, especially since we’re approaching the holiday shopping season. Since the introduction of the Motorola Droid RAZR, the HTC Rezound or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the Galaxy S II has become a phone of the past, in Android time. The South Korean phone maker is completely ignoring the Galaxy Nexus in this commercial. Now that would have made a bigger splash since the Galaxy Nexus is currently the jewel of Google’s Android, not because it’s made by Samsung but because it’s the only one running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. But that puppy is nowhere near a launch date, is it?

Last, but not least, the Galaxy S II, alongside with other Galaxy-branded handsets including the original Galaxy S play a major role in Apple’s worldwide patent-based complaints against Samsung. Apple is saying Samsung copied its iconic iPhone design with the Galaxy lines of smartphones, and should the Cupertino-based company prevail in these legal battles, Samsung may find itself in a position in which it would have to stop Galaxy S II sales in various regions – which is what is happening in the Netherlands. At which point this commercial would become totally useless.

How do you like the commercial?

Last I checked, the August 24 preliminary injunction against Galaxy S II, Galaxy S and Galaxy Ace sales in the Netherlands has not been lifted.

The ironic thing is you’ve got all these Android phone makers and Google leeching off of their master, Apple, and then have the nerve to make fun of them??? Please.

Android makers basically wait in the bushes to see what Apple tells them to work on, then crawls out, bumps their specs, and calls it a day.

Sure we all want choice but these Android fans should know where the source of their stuff comes from and understand that they wouldn’t have their “great” devices if one company (Apple) didn’t push the envelop and drag everyone kicking and screaming to a better place.

If Google/Android could bring out paradigm shifting innovation then they would have something to stand on, and no a feature here and there doesn’t count.
