Siri & A Proxy Server Team Up To Control Most Household Devices
Oh, sure, we’ve all seen the commercials where we ask Siri for directions, or what our schedules look like, or even whether it looks like snow that day. And we know that Siri was easily the biggest win of the entire iPhone 4S launch, even while there were plenty of other great things to note about the iPhone 4S. But now, there’s some new and exciting news involved: seems a brave developer out there has turned Siri’s capabilities clear past eleven by giving it control over a variety of household devices.

Basically, what this developer did was connect Siri to a DNS server acting as a proxy, such that, instead of getting access to mapping data and weather forecasts and pictures of animals, it now had access to the nerve center of just one house, as represented by a proxy server. The proxy server, in turn, takes its cues from Siri, and sends back answers accordingly, up to and including control of a thermostat as evidenced by an included video, offering up not only answers to questions like “What’s the inside temperature?”, but immediately following up by adjusting it to taste.
We’ve already heard Apple’s ideas for using Siri-like devices in controlling televisions, so it makes sense to see them go from there. In fact, it allows for a variety of new and exciting possibilities, like “Start the coffee maker” or “Raise the indoor temperature to 70 degrees starting at four PM”. We might well be looking at the beginning stages of a fully voice-controlled house experience in the spirit of Star Trek. Of course, actually putting this together requires no small amount of expertise, but still, the farther down this particular road we go, the more accessible it will likely become and, thus, the easier it will be for amateurs and laymen to perform the necessary measures themselves.
But what do you guys think here? Are we looking at the start of a whole new paradigm in the way we live? Or do you think this will be a trick of technology more suited toward advanced users? No matter what you think, the comments section is waiting for your word below, so head on down and let’s talk Siri!
