55 Inch OLED Display From Samsung & LG Will Hit In Time For 2012 Olympics, Say Reports

You'll Be Watching The Olympics On A Big OLED Display If New Reports Pan Out

One of the biggest advancements in home theater display technology, and by extension, computer monitors, is the OLED display. But this ultra-thin power sipping technology has been on the “in development” list for a good long time now, and looked to stay that way for substantially longer. However, new reports have emerged to suggest that the OLED display may be coming our way sooner than expected, and if everything goes according to plan, LG and Samsung alike will have 55 inch OLED displays ready for you to buy just in time for the Summer Olympics in London next year.

The current plan, according to reports, is for both LG and Samsung to offer up 55 inch televisions on display at the 2012 CES show, which is only about seven weeks out, with an eye toward getting out actual models that people can buy just ahead of the 2012 Olympic games. LG has fueled their development by moving development resources away from the small and medium OLED display and putting all their eggs in the large OLED basket.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard such plans, though, as big OLED display prototypes have cropped up at the big shows from a variety of vendors previously without a followup release. And things get only worse when you start considering pricing; LG alone has offered up 15 inch OLED panels, reportedly, at $2500, so a 55 inch model would have to be substantially more unless they got the bugs worked out of the process and thus put into a much better position to offer them up.

Still though, considering that Samsung has already signed on with Visa to offer up a new kind of phone specifically for the Olympics, it does make an extra note of sense that they’d look to do likewise with a large screen television of the very latest variety to take advantage of the relatively rare event. Special events are often big for promotions, after all; look at the Super Bowl or anything to do with Black Friday.

So what do you guys think of this? Will we see a commercially-available 55 inch OLED television in time for the Olympics? And would you shell out the cash necessary to pick one up even if it did make an appearance? No matter what you think about this one, we want to hear from you, and the comments section is just the place to do that!

Any news on what kind of resolution that would be sitting at?

    2. Not as yet, KcK–that’s likely to be one of the specs we catch when this hits CES, if it does.
