iOS 5.1 to Bring Siri Upgrades, iOS 5.0.2 to Further Correct Battery Issues

Apple Said to be Working on New iOS Versions to Address Battery Problems & Enable More Complex Siri Commands

After iOS 5.0.1 failed to fix all the battery issues reported by various iDevice users, Apple is now reported to work on a secondary fix meant to further correct these problems. iOS 5.0.2 is expected to arrive at some point in the near future but we’re even more interested in the next major update, iOS 5.1, which should bring some new, more complex, Siri features.

According to German blog Macerkopf, iOS 5.0.2 will arrive at some point by the end of next week as “Apple is making every effort to resolve the problems [Google translation].” iOS 5.1 doesn’t seem to have a release date so far, but the publication expects it to focus mostly on the Siri virtual assistant.

Siri will be able to take more advanced commands such as “take a photo,” “make a video,” “turn on wireless,” or “turn off Bluetooth.” Such commands are not available at this time, but they certainly sound very interesting and should help iPhone 4S users further manage their smartphones by talking to it. On top of such new features, Apple will bring other Siri capabilities to other countries, such as navigation support and Wolfram Alpha integration in their future iOS update. A few weeks ago we told you that Apple will bring maps support and local search to other countries in 2012, as listed on the official Siri FAQ page, which could mean that the iOS 5.1 update may take a while to arrive.

Apple unveiled Siri on October 4, at its iPhone 4S media event, and made it clear since then that the voice-based assistant is going to be launched in beta. In other words the company made sure the public knew since then that more Siri features will be available in time but also that the “beta” label could be used as an explanation for any problems Siri would encounter.

But if iOS 5.1 is going to focus mostly on Siri features, what will it do for non-iPhone 4S devices? After all Apple will not let other iDevices run Siri, at least no existing ones, will they?
