Genesis Version Of Super Street Fighter II Coming To Virtual Console
Sure, you might be beating your friends senseless and participating in killer tournaments with Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, but while you’re enjoying the fancy graphics and smooth physics, it’s important to remember what got us to this point in gaming. Namely, don’t forget Super Street Fighter II, which began this ridiculous tradition of Capcom re-releasing games two or three times before it makes a proper sequel.

If it’s been a while since you’ve played Super Street Fighter II, never fear! Capcom has announced that the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of classic fighter will soon be launching on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan, Europe, and the US, meaning that you can party like it’s 1993 all over again.
But classic (and not so classic) games are released on the Virtual Console all the time – what makes the re-release of Super Street Fighter II newsworthy? Well, how about the fact that it’ll sport online play when it arrives? Yes, you heard me right: online play on a Virtual Console release.
This is an all too rare occurrence, so that’s why Super Street Fighter II is getting so much coverage from the gaming media. Kind of sad isn’t it? There’s at least a couple of other Virtual Console games that support online multiplayer, but why we’re not seeing them released them more often is anyone’s guess. Then again, Nintendo has never made online play a priority, so I guess the fact that Virtual Console games tend to lack online capabilities shouldn’t really surprise anyone.
I wish I could say that this was the beginning of an exciting era in Virtual Console games, but given that Nintendo has already mostly abandoned the Wii, I don’t think we’ll be seeing a change anytime soon. There’s no release date for Super Street Fighter II on the Virtual Console yet, but you can bet that we’ll have that information for you right here at TFTS when Nintendo announces it.
