O2 Officially Confirms Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread Update

Gingerbread Coming Next Week For The O2 Branded Xperia X10, Except In This Case The Carrier Is Warning Against

In what usually comes as good news, we have word of a Gingerbread update that will be available beginning next week. However, on the flip side, the news of the update comes with some words of caution from the carrier. With that being said, the handset is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and the carrier is O2.

Im short, Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be available for those using an Xperia X10 with O2 beginning next week. Anyway, while this update seems to have taken quite some time to get ready (it was originally announced back in March) — that delay came because there were issues discovered during the testing phase.

According to some details provided by O2, the Gingerbread update caused issues which made the camera “virtually unusable.” Of course, from what we understand that has since been taken care of, however O2 is still warning that the update is not reversible and that those who update may have their handset run slower. With that, continue on to read the rest of the good news / bad news statement from O2;

Sometimes this process can take longer than normal, as our Sony Ericsson X10 customers will know all too well. When we were testing the X10 Gingerbread update we found it caused problems with the camera, for instance –which made it virtually unusable. This meant that we have been delaying the update until we and Sony Ericsson could resolve the problem. I’m happy to say we’ve now been able to do this and the X10 update will be launching very shortly.

However, the move from FroYo to Gingerbread does carry a risk that we want you to be aware of. The X10 was really only meant to work with FroYo but Sony Ericsson have managed to squeeze Gingerbread in and this may mean your phone runs slower than you’re used to. The update is irreversible, so this may be something you want to think about before doing the update.

If you’d still like to proceed with the upgrade, you’ll be able to download it in a week from the support section for X10 on the Sony Ericsson website.

Bottom line, we often suggest holding back and not being the first to grab an update, but in this case — we sort of take the side of sticking with Android 2.2 Froyo.
