Apple iPhone 4S Now Available Unlocked & Contract-Free From The US Apple Store

We knew that Apple was planning to begin selling an unlocked iPhone 4S during the month of November. And well, it looks like that time has come. Beginning today, those interested can head on over to the online Apple Store and part with your money.

But that being said, while it is nice to see the unlocked iPhone 4S come available in the US, there is probably one or two points worth mentioning. First, the price, they are (as expected) much higher as compared to the regular on-contract carrier prices. The 16GB model is selling for $649, the 32GB model for $749 and the 64GB model for $849.

In addition, as of the present time all models are showing an expected shipping time of 1 to 2 weeks. In other words, you can move forward with placing an order today, but it may be a few weeks before the phone arrives on your doorstep.

And for those curious, the unlocked iPhone 4S is available in both black and white as well as in the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage models.

Moving past that and into the catch that may keep some from moving forward — these will be available for GSM carriers only. According to Apple;

“The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.”

Bottom line here, while the unlocked (and contract-free) iPhone 4S sounds appealing, unless you are planning to travel outside of the US on a regular basis it may not be the best option. Then again, some are likely willing to shell out the big bucks in an effort to not feel tied down for two-years.
