Apple iOS 5.0.1 Breaks iPhone 4S Even Further
Apple has just released iOS 5.0.1 after an expedited process, which was supposed to resolved some battery issues in the iPhone 4S. But with this update, users complain of even more problems.

Apple released the iOS 5.0.1 update earlier this week as a response to growing complaints about the iPhone 4S battery. The issue was found to have stemmed from a Time Zone setting issue and other software-related problems, and Apple was quick to release the patch in order to fix affected iPhone units. But even with 5.0.1, users are still complaining of persistent battery life problems.
But even worse, iPhone 4S users report that even more problems have cropped up along with the 5.0.1 update. For one, some users who have never experiened battery life issues in the first place now complain of short battery life after the update, according to GigaOM. Users also complain of other problems:
- WiFi signal loss;
- Microphone failures;
- Cellular network inconsistencies.
Apple is likely to be working on a second patch — 5.0.2 — to address these problems, especially the persistent battery life bug. But even with these efforts, some Apple forum posters have started wondering if this was a software issue, or if it’s a design and manufacturing problem in the first place. Will Apple be willing to do a recall if this is the case?
As for the update itself, iPhone 4S users have lauded the fact that upgrading to 5.0.1 is a quick and painless process that takes just a few minutes and installs Over-the-Air. This is not like previous update procedures that required users to plug in their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the computer to be upgraded via iTunes. The update also added a few new features, such as gesture-based multitasking controls.
But for users being inconvenienced by a short battery life, mic problems, WiFi connectivity issues and cellular access difficulties, no amount of convenience from upgrading will be enough to satisfy having a stable and usable smartphone. Have you upgraded to iOS 5.0.1? Any problems or issues that have cropped up? Feel free to share.

I made an interesting observation about two week ago where I noticed that certain users would extoll the virtues of Android on one site and then complain about the massive problems they were having with ‘their‘ iPhone/iPad on another site.
To prove my theory I complied a list of user/screen names of the more rabid anti-Apple posters that claimed to be iPhone/iPad users (45 names). I also used Google to search with pasted comments to find out users with multiple login names (posting the same comment on multiple sites). To keep this task manageable I selected as a frame of reference two resent Apple stories that generated a lot of noise; the battery issue and the Siri downtime news. (I have a bit of time on my hands)
Of the 45 user/screen names and comments from 36 articles (324 Comments total), I found the following results:
Of the 45 user/screen names 36 were unique users (as far as I could tell)
Of the 36 users, 15 were obvious Android users complaining about ‘their’ iPhone battery or Siri problems. This is based upon reading posts of these 15 users on multiple pro Android sites. Many admit in posts that they hate Apple and would never buy one of their products.
These 15 Android users accounted for 223 negative posts on the 36 articles sampled. This means that of the total comments, 68.8% were negative posts by non Apple users pretending to own an Apple device for the sole purpose of spreading false information.
Please bear in mind that there are many variables to this and it is only supplies to highlight the fact that many of these so called Apple iPhone/iPad users are just trolls
Serious problem after upgrading my 4S to 5.01 were I have noticed problems never experienced before. My phone has for instance frozen three times in just a couple of hours time frame when using first Siri, secondly Internet sharing and third after a must needed turn off/turn on after some other issues were a basically needed to do another shut down of the phone. I do not have any data for the battery issues but I can intuitively not notice any better performance in regards to this.
Upgraded iPad 1 to 5.0.1 and it appears that battery life has been negatively affected – I did not notice any degradation when upgrading to 5.0 but it definitely looks like the battery is daring faster after 5.0.1
The upgrade process via wifi was a breeze
Iwasn’t having any problem with my iPhone 4s with fw 5.0. But since I updated to 5.0.1 my phones immediately lost the network signal, showed “No services” instead of my TLC operator and then an ugly “Invalid SIM card”. I had to turn it off and restart. It worked for some time but then again the signal disappeared.
I’m not the only too to experience this problem in Italy, although it seems to happen to the customers of one TLC operator.
But I noticed that this issue is worldwide extended so probably it a fw issue that Apple introduced with the new 5.0.1.
Hope it will soon be fixed cause for now I just paid for a beautiful brick ….
Updated to iOS 5.0.1 on my iphone 4 wirelessly with no problems but the wifi now only works if my phone is within 8 feet of the router. Before I could pick signal strong for up to 150 feet away and never had a problem in the past 16 months including the update to iOS 5. I’d rather have wifi on iPhone and battery issues than no wifi; at least I can charge the battery but I don’t want to incur significant charges from AT&T for having to use 3G.
5.0.1 update appears to have further degraded battery life issue on my iPad 2. Completely drained in standby mode with virtually no use in less than 24 hours.
Regression Testing folks. I’m sick of untested SW releases. The mindset of too many SW programmers is that they can test through compilation. Not sure if you passed a handle properly? Compile and see if it works. After antenna-gate Apple spent $125M on RF screen rooms. They need to focus more of their money on basics like regression testing of every release and less on building some ego-boosting Jetson-era complex. Lack of ability to revert to older FW versions is building a case for jailbreaking. My 1st gen Macbook air had an insidious WiFI problem handling MS Samba mounts that never was fixed until I upgraded through Snow Leopard to Lion. Apple has a checkered history with WiFi. I’ve noticed that rebooting my ipad1 does not fix the connectivity problem. Instead I have to reboot my wireless router. They need to TEST WiFI protocol changes so they do not break interoperability in this manner. I’m guessing they do tricky things to allow shutdown and fast startup and those things may not be fully standard in the WiFi universe.

Mainland China – update to 5.01 on China Telecom, now phone is useless.
Cannot use to dial in / out, or otherwise for calls / data.
Possibly due to 3g not being present – so it doesn’t negotiate a proper connection to the network.
Siri is also useless in Mainland China – but whats new – Apple providing services here ha…
