Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed: Revelations Won't Use Always On DRM

Ubisoft Promises No Always On DRM For Assassin's Creed: Revelations, But Will It Stick To Its Word?

If you’ve heard a PC gamer complaining lately, chances are they’re complaining about Ubisoft. Between delaying PC versions of its games at the 11th hour and putting them on lock down with a restrictive DRM that requires players to be constantly connected to the internet in order to play, Ubisoft has made a fair few enemies in the realm of PC gaming.

As far as DRM goes, the always on type that Ubisoft requires is perhaps the most stupid. Many players don’t have a rock solid internet connect that’s up 24/7, and as a result, those players don’t get to play a game they paid good money for whenever they please. Even worse is the fact that this kind of DRM doesn’t really work, as pirates will have a cracked version that bypasses the DRM up on torrent sites within hours or days of release.

Essentially, this kind of DRM only punishes those who pay for the game, so you can see why people don’t really like it. Perhaps that’s why Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed: Revelations won’t require the infamous always on DRM when it launches on PC later this month, instead only requiring an internet connection the first time you boot the game up. Good news? Absolutely! But just because Ubisoft says something doesn’t make it true.

After all, Ubisoft said the same thing prior to the release of the PC version of From Dust, only to have players discover that From Dust actually did include the always on DRM. Understandably, this led to a fair amount of outrage from early From Dust players, which in turn led to Ubisoft and Steam refunding the purchase price to those who felt they were lied to.

Hopefully the same thing doesn’t happen with Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, but when it comes to the promises that Ubisoft makes, I prefer the mantra of “I’ll believe it when I see it.” What do you think? Will Ubisoft pull a From Dust with Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, or do you think it will stick to its word? Head down to the comments section to share your thoughts!
